1. SCOPE
0101 . NES 512 Part 11 contains details for the selection of glands, grommets and deck
tubes for the cables and equipment wires detailed in Parts 2 - 8 for general
services in Surface Ships and Submarines .
2. RELATED DOCUMENTS
0201 . Reference is made to : Referred to in Clause
0203 . All applications to Ministry establishments for related documents are to quote
the relevant MOD Invitation to Tender or Contract number and date, together
with the sponsoring Directorate and the Tender or Contract Sponsor.
3. DATA FOR GLANDS, GROMMETS AND DECK TUBES
General
0301 . In accordance with MOD policy to reduce the dangers to personnel and damage
to equipment from smoke, toxic fumes and corrosive gases when electrical wires
and cables are subjected to fire, an extended range of LFH wires, cables and
ancillary components is now becoming available . The new range of LFH
components is to be used in all new construction MOD vessels and is also to
be incorporated retrospectively in existing vessels when opportunities arise .
Notes
0302. To facilitate the use of the information on cable glands this part has been
arranged in three divisions according to primary design features viz :-
i, IMPERIAL (Paqes 7 to 101
This gives the principal dimensions of, and diameter of cables that can
be accommodated in, the imperial cable glands - equipment, bulkhead
and deck - to be found in ships and equipment designed and built
prior to metrication .
0303. Particulars of the range of metric cable glands available are given in the following
paragraphs and the principal dimensions, component parts and diameter of
cables that can be accommodated are included on the data pages .
0304 . Cable glands, compression, equipment, threaded spigot, are available in six
sizes each with an aluminium alloy, mild steel or brass gland tube . Each size
gland is available with a long or short gland tube and a long or short threaded
spigot .
)305 . The materials used for the component parts of each gland are as follows :-
* Where fitted in exposed positions mild steel, zinc passivated items are to be
used . Exceptionally, stainless steel may be used .
- NES-512 Part 11
Issue 2
0306. Cable glands, compression, .equipment, plain spigot, are available in six sizes
each with an aluminium alloy, mild steel or brass gland tube . Each size gland
is available with a long or short gland tube .
0307. The materials used for the component parts of each gland are as follows :-
0308 . The availability of the items required should be confirmed before cable glands,
compression, equipment are incorporated in equipment of new or modified
design .
0309 . Cable glands, compression, bulkhead, threaded, are available in six sizes each
with an aluminium alloy or mild steel gland tube . Each size is available in two
lengths, short for use in bulkheads up to 10 mm thick and long for use in
bulkheads between 10 mm and 50 mm thick .
0310 . The materials used for the component parts of each gland are as follows :-
TUBE NUT NUT-PACKING RETAINER
CABLE GLAND PLAIN HEXAGON CABLE GLAND PACKING
0311 . Cable glands, compression, bulkhead, welded, are available in three sizes, in
mild steel only, with a standard length of 160 mm. Hexagon nuts, cable gland
packing, are not available for the largest size . The materials used for the
component parts of each gland are the same as those shown for cable glands,
compression, bulkhead, threaded in para 0310 .
Cable glands, Compression, Deck
0312 Cable glands, compression, deck, are available in six sizes, with a standard
length of 180 mm each with an aluminium alloy, mild steel or copper gland tube .
Each size is available with a short threaded spigot for use in decks up to 10 mm
thick and long threaded spigot for use in decks between 10 mm and 50 mm
thick .
3
NES 512 Part 11
Issue 2
0313 The materials used for the component parts of each gland are as follows :-
)314. The cable gland, heat shrink, flanged is available as a single gland with a tube
diameter of 45 mm, in aluminium alloy only, complete with rubber gasket. The
gland will accommodate cables between 16 mm and 35 mm diameter and is
suitable for use on equipment only .
)315. Cable glands, heat shrink, equipment, threaded spigot are available in five sizes
each with an aluminium alloy or mild steel gland tube . The materials to be used
for the component parts are as given in para 0305 . These glands have been
tabulated in Parts 2-8 inclusive under the above heading .
)316. Cable glands, heat shrink, equipment, plain spigot have been designed in five
sizes each with an aluminium alloy or mild steel gland tube . These items have
not been codified or introduced into Naval Stores and they have NOT been
tabulated in Parts 2-8 .
)317 . Cable glands, heat shrink, bulkhead are available in five sizes, in one length only,
each with an aluminium alloy or mild steel gland tube . The materials to be used
for the component parts are as given in Para 0310 .
)318. Cable glands, heat shrink, deck have been designed in five sizes, with a standard
length of 180 mm, each with an aluminium alloy, mild steel or copper gland tube .
Each size is available with a short threaded spigot for use in decks up to 10 mm
thick and a long threaded spigot for use in decks between 10 mm and 50 mm
thick . The materials to be used for the component parts are as given in Para
0313 . The copper gland tubes have not been codified or introduced into Naval
Stores .
-NES-512 Part 11
Issue 2
0319 . The cable glands, heat shrink shown on pages 37 to 50 inclusive have been
approved for general use .
0320 . The heat shrink mouldings shown on pages 52 to 57 inclusive are to be used
only as indicated on the pages of component parts . In those instances where
an alternative moulding is available the preferred moulding is given first and
should, whenever possible, be used .
0321 . The use of proprietary cable glands is not acceptable without specific approval
for the particular application concerned from Chief Above-water Systems
Executive (CASE) Section ME 313 .

application and for complying with contractual and statutory requirements . Compliance with
a Defence Standard does not in itself confer immunity from legal obligations .
