Project Tittle: AI enabled solutions for Preventive and Predictive Maintenance

Collaborator: Continental Automotive Components India Private Limited

Faculty In charge: Dr. Sumathi R CSE and Dr. Nagaraju MED

Project Scope: Study, Review and Implementation of AI based Predictive and Preventive
applications in facility asset at Continental Bommasandra Plant.

According the International Society of Automation, a typical factory loses between 5% and 20% of
its manufacturing capacity due to downtime. Traditional preventive maintenance processes require
machines to be repaired at intervals based on time or usage. These methods, however, still result in
significant instances of equipment failure resulting in idle workers, increased scrap rates, lost
revenues and angry customers. In addition, preventive maintenance may replace parts that still have
significant working life, which can be a waste of time and money.

AI enabled predictive maintenance uses a variety of data from IOT sensors imbedded in equipment,
data from manufacturing operations, environmental data, and more to determine which components
should be replaced before they break down. AI models can look for patterns in data that indicate
failure modes for specific components or generate more accurate predictions of the lifespan for a
component given environmental conditions. When specific failure signals are observed such as
vibration, temperature, power consumption or component aging criteria are met, the components can
then be replaced during scheduled maintenance windows.

Vice President, Institute Innovation Council
Assistant Professor
Mechanical Engineering Department
SIT, Tumakuru.

SIT has been actively pursuing innovation & entrepreneurship activities on campus. It has established
a New Age Incubation Centre supported by the Government of Karnataka in 2015.This has become a
platform to identify, nurture and support student innovators and entrepreneurs. In addition, the institute
conducts regular Entrepreneurship Awareness camps supported by DST-NIMAT (NSTEDB),
Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, which has become a source of identifying potential
student entrepreneurs.
SIT has been working on building the entrepreneurship ecosystem on the campus. There are many
student innovations that are being initiated as a business venture from the new age incubation program.
SIT has also established a state-of-the art TBI during 2019 to support innovative startups in the
campus. There are already ten startups started by our faculty, alumni and students in our TBI.

The following ecosystem nurture innovation and entrepreneurship in the campus:

1. Entrepreneurship Development Cell was established with a grant of Rs 8.00 Lakh from AICTE in
2008. It creates awareness about entrepreneurship in the campus. 35 Entrepreneurship Awareness
Camps (EACs) were organized in association with DST under the NIMAT scheme, EDII, Ahmadabad
during the last 5 years.
2. The New Age Incubation Network (NAIN) granted by Government of Karnataka is being managed
on the campus since 2015. It has become a platform for promoting and nurturing entrepreneurs on
campus. This platform has supported 25 student teams so far, to build solutions for the local problems.
Many of these student innovators are keen on building a business venture out of these ideas.
3. MSME Business Incubator was granted by the Ministry of MSME in 2018 to facilitate entrepreneurs
to design and develop the prototype and commercialize their innovations.
4. Institute Innovation Council
SIT has established Institute Innovation Council (IIC) in 2018 under the aegis of Ministry of Education
(MoE). IIC will focus on creating complete ecosystem which will foster the culture of Innovation
across our institution from ideas generation to pre-incubation, incubation and graduating from the
incubator as successful start-ups.
SIT IIC will encourage the creative energy of our student population to work on new ideas and
innovation and promote them to create start-ups and entrepreneurial ventures. We have done around
30 different webinars/workshops and Hackathons till date to promote IIC activities in the campus.

5. Siddaganga Technology Business Incubator (STBI)

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING MECHISMO - 2022

SIT has established state of-the-art Siddaganga Technology Business Incubator with an area of
10000 sq. ft., which is partially supported by KCTU, Govt. of Karnataka with a grant of Rs 42.72
Lakh. Another 10000 sq. ft., area at the cost of Rs 1.5 crore is made available for TBI activities. Ten
startups are already in operation in our TBI. The provisions have been made to students, faculty,
alumni and prospective innovators to have their start-ups in the TBI and also avail facilities available
in the laboratories including those of research labs.

Siddaganga Incubation Foundation (SIF), section 8 company has been formed with a vision to support
innovation and Entrepreneurship. Its Primary mandate is to support innovators and start-ups who are
working on technology solutions to cater to rural India. Also, it envisages to support in developing
solutions to solve problems of rural India, predominantly in the areas of IoT, Grassroot innovation and
Agriculture. Recent update is that we received a grant of around 5 Crore as a total project cost
to set up Agritech TBI in our campus under NIDHI (National Initiative for Developing and
Harnessing Innovation) i-TBI from DST, Govt. of India.

Siddi Loka, an initiative of Siddaganga TBI is the brain child of Honey Bee Network (HBN)-
Karnataka chapter. We are looking at innovation as the solution for most of the day to day problems
associated with all walks of our lives especially in the rural areas. We are building a strong network
to tap the grass root innovations and make them into a scalable product or service as demanded by
the market in the Agritech space.

I strongly appeal all the students of SIT to pursue entrepreneurship as a career option. It is the right
opportunity for all of you to make use of this great platform created in the form of a Technology
Business Incubator in the campus supported and nurtured by our Sri Siddaganga Education Society. I
wish all the students to make use of this facility to work on your creative idea and establish a venture
while you are in SIT during four years of stay in the campus.

BIODIESEL IS AN ALTERNATIVE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE

Manjunatha Swamy K M
Research Scholar
Department of Mechanical Engineering
SIT-Tumkur.

Biodiesel is an important alternative renewable energy source because it is environmental friendly,

non-toxic, and has lower emission gases when used for the combustion. Biodiesel is produced from
direct transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fat, where the corresponding triglycerides react
with small molecule alcohol such as methyl alcohol in the presence of a catalyst. Currently, more
than 95% of biodiesel is produced from edible oils which are easily available on large scale from the
agricultural industry. However, continuous and large-scale production of biodiesel from edible oils
has recently been of great concern because they compete with food materials - the food versus fuel
dispute. There are concerns that biodiesel feedstock may compete with food supply in the long-term.
Therefore, non-edible plant oils have been found to be promising crude oils for the production of
biodiesel. The use of non-edible oils is very significant in developing countries because of the
tremendous demand for edible oils as food and that they are far too expensive to be used as fuel at
present. In Thailand, palm oil is an important raw material for biodiesel production. However, palm
oil has been used for essential consumption and food industry. Thus, using palm oil as raw material
to produce biodiesel has caused the shortages edible oil consumption and raised palm oil price in the
country. At this point, research for non-edible oils or new non-edible crops is crucial for biodiesel
production industry in Thailand. Likewise, Jatropha curcas plants is promoted as raw material for
biodiesel because it plants easily, grows rapidly and offers high yield of oil. However, due to the
limited plantation area for Jatropha curcas plants, they are insufficient to be a feedstock in biodiesel
production. The main drawback of vegetable oil is their high viscosity and low volatility, which
causes poor combustion in diesel engines. Therefore, the vegetable oil cause poor fuel atomization,
incomplete combustion and carbon deposition on the injector and valve seats resulting in serious
engine fouling. This necessitates the reduction in viscosity of the vegetable oils for use as fuel in CI
engines. The commonly employed methods to reduce the viscosity of vegetable oils are
microemulsion, direct use and blending of diesel/oil, thermal cracking (pyrolysis), and
transesterification (alcoholysis). Among them, the most popularly used method is transesterification
in the presence of a catalyst (e.g., liquid acids or bases, enzymes, or solid catalysts). This process
reduces the viscosity to a value comparable to that of diesel fuel and hence improves combustion.

 Eshwar N holds the Guinness World Records title for "Fastest Mile Controlling a Table Tennis
Ball" i.e., 6 min 16.53 sec. He has been playing table tennis for many years and considers himself
skilled with a paddle and ball. When he saw this record title he knew he wanted to accomplish it.
Eshwar began training running and finally combined his table tennis prowess with his newfound
running skills to become Officially Amazing during his successful attempt. VTU Central Zone
Champions in Table Tennis and won many other open table tennis tournaments held at Bengaluru.
 Guinness World Record Broken ! After a successful Attempt and little more than a year of running to
break a record.
 World Record has been broken for title: Fastest Mile controlling a Table Tennis Ball , when I started
to think about breaking a GWR, essential there were two inner voices: • It's impossible? • May be if I
try, I might succeed? Finally, it's true, the choices we make between different options determine who
we want to be.
 When I went ahead to try it, first day of practice felt like it's impossible. As time and practice
progressed, my timing was inching closer towards than current title: 6 minutes 49.91 seconds.
 Attempt was the most challenging in terms of the timing ( 6 minutes 49 seconds). My best timing was
6 minutes 55 seconds.
 When they say the problem is big enough, you need to break and rule them. In order to beat the record
of 370 seconds, one mile is 1609.344 meters, I needed to finish a lap of 400 meters track within 90
seconds.
 Every day I started inching closer to breaking the record.
 On 2nd February 2021, I attempted the record. Was lucky enough to break the record on my Attempt
clocked 6 minutes 16.53 seconds.
 I am very much indebted to the lot people (My parents, Praveen Sir, Yogeesh Sir, Guru Sir, Pradeep
Sir, Likith, Sandeep, Rakshith, Rajendra, Madhu, Chandan team of Cadsoft surveyor, my friends) and
well-wishers who supported me in this.
 I hope this record will inspire people to break many records and sport Table Tennis will gain
popularity.
 I would like to end my favourite quote: “Defeat is a state of mind; no one is ever defeated until defeat
has been accepted as a reality.”- Bruce Lee.
 Attaching a small video clip of how the Attempt was made and the Team without them, it was not
possible.
