Course Description:
The course is a digital based learning and investigative one emphasizing student involvement in
learning. Students are expected to develop not only knowledge and understanding of content
areas, but also core scientific skills as well as an awareness and appreciation of science. The lower
secondary Science Stage 9 curriculum contains three main syllabus sections namely, Biology,
Chemistry and Physics. Topics are accompanied by learning outcomes that reflect an investigative
and logical approach.

Course Objectives/ Learning Outcomes:

Students:
 develop an appreciation of the contribution of science to finding solutions to personal, social
and global issues relevant to their lives now and in the future
 develop a willingness to use evidence and reason to engage with and respond to scientific and
technological ideas as informed, reflective citizens

Materials:
 Cambridge Checkpoint Science Course book Stage 9

PROJECT BASED LEARNING

Students are required to participate in and present a project-based learning (PBL)
assignment for this course to a public audience at least once per semester. PBL is self-
directed, collaborative, and interdisciplinary. Students will receive guidelines describing
the expectations for the PBL during the semester.

ATTENDANCE:
If you are absent, then it is your responsibility to retrieve any work you missed while you
were gone. Absent students are responsible for checking the absent folder and the
website for homework. Work not turned in while you were absent will not be counted as
late as long as it is turned in the day you return to school.

CHEATING/ PLAGIARISM
Cheating and/or plagiarism is not tolerated. Any students who cheats or plagiarizes will
not receive a score for the assignment. Additional disciplinary action may be taken at the
discretion of the teacher. Cheating and plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, copying
homework, classwork, test answers, talking during a test or quiz, using prohibited
technology during a benchmark, allowing someone to copy your work, or trying to pass off
someone else’s work as your own.

GRADING Policies:
This course follows standards based grading practices to determine the student’s overall
final grade that is recorded at the end of each semester. Students will be evaluated on their
overall proficiency of the high priority standards associated with this course. The teacher

Page | 10
will evaluate student work and assessments to determine their skill level and assign a
score of 1-4 based on the scale below. The overall grade will be determined by averaging
the scores on the high priority standards.
Score Grading Scale
4: Advanced A: 4.00 - 3.33
3: Proficient B: 3.32 - 2.70
2: Basic C: 2.69 - 2.00
1: Below Basic NP: 1.00 - 1.99

*NP = No Progress (Student will not earn credit for the

course)

Parents and students will receive online access to their grades and can check them at any
time.

MAKEUP EXAMS/RETAKES:
Students will be given multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency in the high
priority standards. A makeup exam or retake will be given at the discretion of the teacher.
Requirements for makeup exams or retakes may include but are not limited to: teacher-
parent conferences, teacher-student conferences, attending tutoring, and/or completion of
prerequisite work.

EXTRA CREDIT:
No extra credit will be given for this course. Student grades will be based solely on
student mastery of the high priority standards.

COMMUNICATION
Parents can contact me at any time via email at [email protected] I am also
available for a parent-teacher conference upon appointment.
