Proper Tool Selection

A tool is a handheld device that aids in accomplishing a task. Tools range from a traditional
metal cutting part of a machine to an element of a computer program that activates and controls
a particular function.
Preparing for the task to be undertaken includes proper tool selection.
1. How do you select the best tool for the job? First, know and understand in detail the
scope of work to be accomplished, second, plan for the scope taking into account the
sequence of tasks.
2. Selecting the best tool for each task requires training in the proper use of the tools, field
experience in their safe use, and following the manufacturer’s guidance and
instructions for that specific tool.
3. When obtaining the tool all the associated tooling and consumable parts, as
recommended by the manufacturer, must be included. In addition, related consumable
parts must also be selected and used according to their manufacturer’s instructions.
Safe Use of tools
Once selected, use the tool for the purpose for which it was designed. Not all tools
come with detailed instructions, but there are those that do spell out the safety ―Do’s and
Don’ts for your safety. If there are set-up/use options, operator judgment must always be based
on what is the safest way to use the tool.
Environmental Safety and Health Program requires the following:
1. Clean tools and equipment work more efficiently. At the end of each working day clean
the tools and equipment you used and check them for any damage. If you note and
damage, tag the tool as faulty and organize a repair or replacement.
2. Electrical current can travel over oily or greasy surfaces. Keep electrical power hand
tools free from dust and dirt and make sure they are free of oil and grease.
3. All workshop hand tools, and equipment should have maintenance schedule. Always
complete the tasks described on the schedule at the required time. This will help to
keep the hand tools in safe working order.
4. Store commonly used hand tools in an easy-to-reach location. If a tool or a piece is too
difficult to return, it could be left on a workbench or on the floor where it will become a
safety hazard. Keep your work area tidy. This will help you work more efficiently and
safely.

Four Categories of Computer System Servicing Tools
In repairing and maintaining hardware equipment, it is necessary to have a toolkit that
contains all the necessary tools in different types of jobs. Now, you will learn which tools to use
in preparing a task.
1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools - Electrostatic discharge or ESD is one of the
few things you can do to damage or destroy your computer or parts in your computer.
The best method of preventing ESD is to use an ESD wrist strap, grounding mat, or
grounding workbench.
2. Hand tools - is a device for performing work on a material or a physical system using
hands only. The hand tools can be manually used by employing force, or electrically
powered, using an electrical current.
3. Cleaning tools - Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining
or repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not
damaged during cleaning.
4. Diagnostic tools - Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new
generation of hardware and operating system update, but that doesn't mean they're
problem-free. There is a wide array of devices used to test and diagnose the integrity
of circuits and functionality of ports of electronic equipment like computers.

Common the tools using in Computer System Servicing

Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools

Anti-static wrist strap is used to prevent ESD

damage to computer equipment.

Anti-static mat is used to stand on or place

hardware on to prevent static electricity from building
up.

Isopropyl alcohol is used to wipe away sticky
substances on the surface of components; its quick
evaporation lessens the chance of causing electrical
damage to components

Diagnostic Tools

Multi-tester is a tool used to test the integrity of

circuits and therefore the quality of electricity in
computer components.

LAN Tester is a tool designed to check most

network cable wiring.

Proper use of tools

A computer technician is requiring using appropriate tools within the toolkit when
repairing computers. Here is the correct use of tools in working areas.

Several tools are magnetized. When working around electronic devices, take care that
tools you are using haven’t been magnetized. Magnetic fields may be harmful to data stored
on magnetic media. Test your tool by touching the tool with a screw. If the screw is drawn to
the tool, do not use the tool.

1. Screws. Screws can become exposed if you over-tighten them with a screwdriver. An
exposed screw can be struck within the screw hole, or it should not tighten firmly.
Discard exposed screws.
a. Flat-head screwdriver. Don’t use a flat head screwdriver to get rid of a Phillips
head screw. Never use a screwdriver as a pry bar or crowbar. If you can’t
remove a component, check to determine if there’s a clip or latch that’s securing
the component in position.
b. Philips screwdriver. Use a Phillips head screwdriver with crosshead screws.
Do not use this kind of screwdriver to puncture anything. This can damage the
head of the screwdriver.
2. Soldering iron and stand. Always use a soldering iron and stand to avoid burns or
damage after soldering.
3. Crimping tool and wire stripper. Always verify the types of wire or cable of a crimper
if it is capable of crimping. And make sure that the stripper has a comfortable grip,
cleanly removes insulation from wires, and keeps the actual wire intact.

4. Long Nose Pliers and Tweezer. When holding wires, grip the long nose pliers
carefully and firmly. Do not use it as a hammer. For hard-to-reach objects or small ones,
use the tweezer.
5. Multi-tester and Lan tester. Always maintain the functionality and accuracy of multi
tester and LAN tester to ensure the accurateness of measurement of any things that
you measure.
6. Anti-static wrist strap. Check properly the overall use, possible wear, and cleanliness
of the wrist strap. Always ground yourself while working with electronic components.

Proper Maintenance of Tools

To prevent tools from damage, we must properly maintain the tools to keep them safe and in
usable condition. Here are the subsequent requirements for tools and equipment maintenance:
1. Obtaining a duplicate of the upkeep schedule recommended by the manufacturer.
2. Ensuring that maintenance is performed as needed.
3. Ensuring that the person(s) performing the upkeep is competent.
4. Retaining records of maintenance/service conducted.
5. Specifying who is to blame for overseeing equipment maintenance and where the
records are kept.
6. Putting in a system for removal and tagging of damaged or defective tools and
equipment.

To ensure that tools and equipment remain in condition and last for a protracted time,
store them properly so it will be easy to search out when needed, and are less likely to be lost.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

This is to shield you from hazards that may happen during the working time at your
workplace. Always wear PPE equipment like gloves, safety glasses, protective masks, and
rubber sole shoes.
