Lesson
Using and Maintaining Hand
1 Tools
Using and maintaining hand tools helps you gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
you need to identify, prepare, use and maintain tools and equipment in Computer System
Service, which is your basic step in becoming a competent computer technician.
Do you have hand tools at home? Can you recognize them? Several of tools are
being used in repairing and maintaining electrical and electronic components.
In this module, you will learn different hand tools and their uses in repairing and
maintaining computer devices to avoid damage of tools and safety procedures with
appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Identify the tools on the boxes. Write your answer on your notebook.

Four Categories of Computer System Servicing Tools
In repairing and maintaining hardware equipment, it is necessary to have a toolkit that
contains all the necessary tools in different types of jobs. Now, you will learn which tools to use
in preparing a task.
1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools - Electrostatic discharge or ESD is one of the
few things you can do to damage or destroy your computer or parts in your computer.
The best method of preventing ESD is to use an ESD wrist strap, grounding mat, or
grounding workbench.
2. Hand tools - is a device for performing work on a material or a physical system using
hands only. The hand tools can be manually used by employing force, or electrically
powered, using an electrical current.
3. Cleaning tools - Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining
or repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not
damaged during cleaning.
4. Diagnostic tools - Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new
generation of hardware and operating system update, but that doesn't mean they're
problem-free. There is a wide array of devices used to test and diagnose the integrity
of circuits and functionality of ports of electronic equipment like computers.

Isopropyl alcohol is used to wipe away sticky
substances on the surface of components; its quick
evaporation lessens the chance of causing electrical
damage to components
Diagnostic Tools
Several tools are magnetized. When working around electronic devices, take care that
tools you are using haven’t been magnetized. Magnetic fields may be harmful to data stored
on magnetic media. Test your tool by touching the tool with a screw. If the screw is drawn to
the tool, do not use the tool.
1. Screws. Screws can become exposed if you over-tighten them with a screwdriver. An
exposed screw can be struck within the screw hole, or it should not tighten firmly.
Discard exposed screws.
a. Flat-head screwdriver. Don’t use a flat head screwdriver to get rid of a Phillips
head screw. Never use a screwdriver as a pry bar or crowbar. If you can’t
remove a component, check to determine if there’s a clip or latch that’s securing
the component in position.
b. Philips screwdriver. Use a Phillips head screwdriver with crosshead screws.
Do not use this kind of screwdriver to puncture anything. This can damage the
head of the screwdriver.
2. Soldering iron and stand. Always use a soldering iron and stand to avoid burns or
damage after soldering.
3. Crimping tool and wire stripper. Always verify the types of wire or cable of a crimper
if it is capable of crimping. And make sure that the stripper has a comfortable grip,
cleanly removes insulation from wires, and keeps the actual wire intact.

4. Long Nose Pliers and Tweezer. When holding wires, grip the long nose pliers
carefully and firmly. Do not use it as a hammer. For hard-to-reach objects or small ones,
use the tweezer.
5. Multi-tester and Lan tester. Always maintain the functionality and accuracy of multi
tester and LAN tester to ensure the accurateness of measurement of any things that
you measure.
6. Anti-static wrist strap. Check properly the overall use, possible wear, and cleanliness
of the wrist strap. Always ground yourself while working with electronic components.
To ensure that tools and equipment remain in condition and last for a protracted time,
store them properly so it will be easy to search out when needed, and are less likely to be lost.
A. Answer the following questions and write your answer on your notebook.
1. What are the tools you found in this lesson?
2. Do you think those tools are necessary in performing a hardware repair? Why?
B. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is wrong on the
space provided. Write your answer on your notebook
___________________ 1. All tools should be kept in good condition with regular
maintenance.
____________________ 2. Use a flat head screwdriver with a crosshead screw.
____________________ 3. Preventive maintenance is the systematic care and
protection of tools, equipment, and machines to keep them in a safe, usable
condition, limit downtime, and extend productivity.

Let us now reflect on what we have learned from this module. Speak freely what is in your
mind about the topic by trying to answer the following statements below:
1. The lesson made me understand that computer tools and equipment are
_____________________________________ .
2. I need to open the computer case. To easily remove the screw, I should use
________________ to loosen cross head screws.
3. To test the integrity of circuits and the quality of electricity in computer components. I
will use __________________.
4. I need to test the network cable wiring, I should use _________________ for Ethernet
connection.
5. To ensure that the tools are in good condition, proper use of tools and equipment can
___________________________________ and proper maintained tools and
equipment can __________________________________.
Let us see how far you know about maintenance activity. What do you think would be the
maintenance activity of the following tools? Choose your answer from the choices in the box
