Fiber To The Room in Hospitality
To meet ever-increasing connectivity needs, more hotels and Multi
Dwelling Units (MDU) operators are deploying Fiber to the Room (FTTR)

The Benefits of FTTR

High Performance
Easily accommodate connectivity needs and support multiple devices
per guest and popular streaming services without causing network
strain.

Future proofing
Fiber’s seemingly unlimited bandwidth is ready to support future
generations of Ethernet and PON speed upgrades.

Extended Range
Depending on the type of fiber and modulation, fiber links can extend
over multiple kilometers compared to the more limited range of copper
cables

Fiber Backpack vs. Traditional ONT
1 Easy to install
FBP Snaps right in the back of the wall mounted AP

Secure
2 FBP can’t be dismounted without special tools. Standard ONT
can be easily fiddled with by hotel guest

3 Room Aesthetics
Hidden behind the AP vs an additional ONT box
VS.
Single power supply
4 FBP and AP powered by single power supply. Less wires /
outlets and wall warts do deal with

Versatile
5 Support broad range of optics via interchangeable SFP vs
built-in optic

Standard PoE vs. Passive PoE
How standard PoE handshake works (802.3af)

PoE 802.3af 1. Device connected to PoE port

Powered Device Power Source Equipment 2. PSE sends a short low-voltage pulse to the PD.
(PD) (PSE)

3. PSE reads the value of the electrical current on

the wire.
4. If the connected device does not draw power,
PoE power is turned off
5. If the device draws power, the PSE checks
what PoE class this current value corresponds
to, and provides power accordingly (48v nominal
voltage).

• No such handshake with Passive PoE!

• 48v PoE power is always applied to the port
22 PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL © 2022 CommScope, Inc. | v19
48V Passive PoE compatibility with existing devices

• PoE devices that support standard PoE

(802.3af) should work fine with 48v
passive PoE

• If a non PoE devices is connected to a

48v passive PoE port
• If the device Ethernet port is not protected, damage
may occur

PoE disabled by default through software configuration

• We are considering disabling PoE Out in the

default software configuration for the H550
passive PoE model.
• End users can enable it through the
management interface if they want to use PoE
Out
• However, PoE will not be disabled at GA date
with the initial release of the passive PoE
H550 model
