Comfort measures

Identify at least 7 non pharmacologic pain relief interventions. Explain each intervention
and give 1 example activity for each intervention, on how you are going to apply/use it
to your patient.

1. Biofeedback techniques - The use of electrical equipment to monitor bodily

activities like breathing and heart rate is known as biofeedback. As you become
more conscious of your body functions, you will be able to control them in the
future.

Activity example - Psychological and physical health can be improved by

biofeedback. In a biofeedback session, sensors are used to monitor various body
systems without causing any discomfort. Once you've seen the outcomes, you
can experiment with other approaches to altering them. With a little experience,
you'll be able to adjust on your own.

2. Acupuncture - Acupuncture is a procedure in which acupuncture points are

stimulated. Specific areas of your body are addressed here. Acupuncture can be
practiced in a variety of ways.

Activity example - Hair-thin needles are used in acupuncture. When the needle is
inserted, most patients report only minor discomfort. The needle is introduced to
a point where the patient feels pressure or ache because of the injection. During
treatment, the needles may be heated or mildly charged with electricity.

3. Massage therapy - During massage therapy, the soft tissues of the body are
manipulated in various ways. Massage therapists treat clients by using touch to
manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body.

Activity example - Massage therapy can be applied to a person who wants to

relieve pain, improve circulation, relieve stress, and increase relaxation. A
therapist helps people be healthier and happier, among other things.
4. Physical therapy - Physical therapy is a form of treatment for those whose
mobility and flexibility have been compromised due to injury or illness. When
patients are rehabilitated, they learn to use their own muscles to improve their
flexibility, range of motion, and strength and endurance.

Activity example – When you are doing physical therapy, your physical therapist
will show you to improve your mobility and overall well-being. It doesn't matter if
you have access to the most cutting-edge equipment, or if you prefer to work out
on bikes or treadmills. During your session, your PT will supervise all the
exercises you undertake.

5. Psychotherapy - Treatment of psychological illnesses and mental suffering

through the application of psychotherapeutic procedures is called psychotherapy.

Activity example – During treatment, Discussing, listening, and counseling are

just some of the ways psychotherapists help cure mental and behavioral
illnesses. Additionally, it can benefit those who suffer from chronic pain by
teaching them coping strategies, addressing negative thoughts and emotions that
can exacerbate their suffering, and providing them with support.

6. Electrical Stimulation - There are a variety of ways to stimulate the skin,

including electrical stimulation (e-stim). Two of the most common are: Electrical
muscle stimulation (EMS) aids in muscle recovery. To alleviate pain,
transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is used.

Activity example - You can use electrical stimulation in the treatment of sprains
and arthritis, back pain, and scoliosis, as well as sciatica and lumbar stenosis
(TENS). By minimizing muscle spasms, the muscular kind of electric stimulation
can help the muscles develop stronger.

7. Surgery - Surgery is a branch of medicine that removes, repairs, or moves

organs and tissues to treat injuries, illnesses, and deformities. Often, surgery
involves cutting into the body.

Activity example - Surgery can sometimes be necessary to treat severe pain,

especially when it is caused by back problems or serious musculoskeletal
injuries. There are always risks to getting surgery, and it does not always work to
treat pain. So, it is important to go through all the risks and benefits with your
health care provider.
