1. A monochromatic light of wavelength 589nm is incident from air on the water surface. What is
the wavelength, frequency and speed of i) reflected ii) refracted light? Refractive index of water
is 1.33 iii) for what angle of incidence is the reflected ray normal to the incident ray?
2. A monochromatic light of wavelength 500nm from a narrow slit is incident on the double slit.
If the separation of 10 bright fringes on the screen 1m away is 2cm, then find the slit separation.
3. In Young’s double slit experiment, as slits are separated by 0.28mm and the screen is placed
1.4mm away. The distance between the central bright fringe and the fourth bright fringe is
measure to be 1.2cm. Determine the wavelength of light used in the experiment.
4. In Young’s double slit experiment distance between the slit is 1mm. The fringe width is found
to be 0.6mm. When the screen is moved through a distance of 25cm, the fringe width becomes
0.75mm. Find a wavelength of the light used.
5. In Young’s double slit experiment using a source of light of wavelength 5000Ao, the fringe
width obtained is 0.6mm. If the distance between the slit and the screen is reduced to half, what
should be the wavelength of the source to get fringes of 0.45mm wide?
6. The slit in Young’s double slit experiment are 0.4mm apart. Interference fringes of width 1.5mm
are observed on the screen place 1.2m away from the slits. Calculate the wavelength of the light
used. If the apparatus is immersed in water of refractive index 4/ 3, what is the change in fringe
width?
7. Polarizing angle of an optical medium is 56° calculate its critical angle.
8. A parallel beam of light of wavelength 500nm falls on a narrow slit and the resultant diffraction
pattern is observed on the screen 2m away. If it’s observed that the first minimum is at a distance
of 2.5mm from the centre of the screen. Find the width of slit.
9. What is a Brewster angle for air to glass transition? (Given refractive index of glass is 1.5)
10. A rigid beam of light consisting of two wavelengths 400nm and 500nm is used to obtain
interference fringes in Young’s double slit experiment. The distance between the slits is 0.3mm
and the distance between the slit and the screen is 1.5m. Compute the least distance of the point
from the central maximum, where the bright fringes due to both the wavelengths coincide.
