Unit 1: Rizal in the Eyes of the Filipinos
 Motivation
1. How much do you know the characteristics of Dr. Jose P. Rizal? Is this man truly an
exceptional person? Elaborate your answer.
- Dr. Jose Rizal was an intellectual person. He was a professional doctor as well as
a poet, novelist, painter, sculptor, etc.. For me he was indeed an exceptional
person because of his many talents, his contributions and accomplishments, and
also for what he did to our country.
2. In your own opinion, what do you think of our present and future condition as a nation or
country without Dr. Jose P. Rizal? How significant is the life and works of Rizal in
shaping our destiny as a sovereign nation?
- In my opinion, I think without Dr. Jose Rizal in the past, our present and future
condition will be a misery. Our country would still be colonized by Spaniards. We
won’t have freedom because our fellow Filipino doesn’t have courage and
braveness to face colonizers. The life and works of Rizal is very significant in
shaping our destiny because it was him who awakened the spirit of nationalism to
Filipinos, and it was his novels who inspired many Filipinos to stand up and fight
for the sake of our country.

General Impression:
Dr. Jose Rizal had many talents in his time. With his talent he helped a lot people those who
are in need. He is truly talented and a gifted person. However, there are also people who doesn’t
believed in him and accuse him and that leads to his death.

Unit 2: The Humanity of Heroes

 Motivation
1. Among your friends, family or love once, who will you consider a hero? and Why?
- Among my friends, family or my love once, I will consider my father as my hero,
because he protect and provide us our necessities for us to live. He sacrifices
himself, do the hard work in order for us to be happy and safe.
2. In your own opinion, what is the most important qualification of a hero?
- For me, the most important qualification of a hero is courage, bravery, honest,
moral integrity, idealistic, and nurturing. He/she is someone who fights and
sacrifices himself/herself for his country or family and who is able to overcome
his or her obstacles in life.

1. According to various Philippine presidents, the overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are
the present day heroes? Using the criteria presented in this reading, are they worthy of
being called heroes? Justify your answers.
- Yes, because they are brave and is willing to sacrifice themselves just for the
better lives of their families. And I am proud of the OFW workers who bears the
longing and just work to have money and give to their families.
2. Compose your own criteria of a “HERO”.

2. What is your reaction about this – “Rizal is an American made Hero”.
I think Rizal is called an American made Hero because his philosophy of reforms
was consistent and more advantageous to the US’ colonization policy in the
Philippines. He also travelled abroad learning and schooling.

1. Analyze the issues and interests that were upheld to push the Rizal Law. Are these issues
still valuable at present?
- Back in the 1950s, the Philippines, much like Today, was dominated by the
religious sector. Today, these issues between the government and the religious
sector have been more prevalent than ever. Although this time, it’s not just the
Catholic Religion that has stake in government affairs.
2. What is your personal stand regarding the approval of the “Rizal Law”? What is the
relevance of this law in our nation building?
- I think it is right to consider implementing Rizal Law because it gave us the
chance to look back at the sacrifices of our national hero Jose Rizal and bring
back the fire of nationalism that is gradually fading today.

Unit 1. Rizal’s Family Background

 Motivation
1. How do you describe a typical Filipino Family?
- A typical Filipino family always help each other through hardships. They love
and care for one another, they are happy seeing their love one happy and they
understand each other.
2. Do you think Dr. Jose Rizal has an ordinary or a typical Filipino Family?
- Yes, Rizal has an ordinary, typical, and a big family in his time.
3. Can you compare your own family to Rizal’s family?
- Yes, Rizal’s family was a wealthy family, while me, I have poor but a happy
family.
4. Do you think a family background can affect an individuals’ life?
- It depends on the individual if he/she will let his/her life be affected by his/her
family background.

- For me, education is very important because it teaches every student everything

- Education will help me get a better job that can sustain me and my family. It also
help me grow as an individual. Thus, we are able to shape a better society to live

1. How do you describe Rizal as a student?

- Rizal was a man of many talents. He excelled in everything he does. He is good in
painting, poetry, and others. In academic studies, he surpassed them all in many
languages. His classmates were jealous of his intellectual superiority.
2. Who do you think is the most important person that influence Rizal to be excellent and
determined to his studies? Why?
- It was his mother who influenced him to be excellent and determine to his studies.
Rizal was very determined to study Ophthalmology to treat his sick mother who
had cataract in her eyes. His mother taught him discipline and compassion.
3. Can you enumerate the talents and skills of Dr. Jose Rizal during his studies in the
Philippines? How do you think Rizal acquires these abilities in his young age?
- He is an expert in the field of medicine, a poet, and an essayist. Rizal also
exhibited other amazing talents. He knew how to paint, sketch, and make
sculptures, a novelist, and a great teacher. Rizal acquired this abilities because he
grew up in an environment conducive for learning and proper upbringing. He is a
boy of creativity, passion for knowledge, education, and religion.

- The most exciting experience I had in travelling places is meeting new people,
enjoying the scenery, taking pictures as a remembrance, and good memories.
2. Is there any place in the world you want to visit? What place is that and why?
- Yes, honestly I have many places in mind that I want to visit but unfortunately I
have no money yet. But, if I am given the chance to travel where I want to go, I
would travel in a place where it is calm, silent, more trees and plants, where I can
enjoy the place there stress-free. I want to go there with my family.

Orient de France in Paris.
Heidelberg He worked at the University Eye Hospital under the direction
of Dr. Otto Becker and attended the lectures of Doctor Becker

Berlin He became a member of the Anthropological Society, the
Ethnographic Society, and the Geographic Society.
Hongkong He studied the Chinese language, Chinese drama and
theater, Chinese cultures and Chinese values.

Unit IV: Rizal’s Last Days

1. If you can have the opportunity to chose, where do you want to stay during the last days
of your life? Who were the people you want to be with you? And, how will you spend
this precious time with them?
- If I’m given the chance to choose where do I want to stay during the last days of
my life, I will choose to stay beside my parents. I will thank them for all the
hardship they went through just for me to have a better life, I will thank them for
loving and teaching me good manners and lessons in life. I will also say sorry for
all the mistake I’ve done to them, and ask forgiveness to the things I haven’t done
to make them proud and happy.
2. What battle or fight in your life, where you will not hesitate to sacrifice your life? For
your dreams, family or country?
- I’m willing to sacrifice my life to my family. I will fight for my family because
family is love. They loved and accept me for who I am and I will fight for them.

Exercise 1: Describe the Life of Dr. Jose Rizal in Dapitan. (10pts)

Dr. Jose Rizal lived a simple life in Dapitan.

From there, he had lots of contribution to his
community which is a great help for a lot of
people. He helped in the livelihood of the
people. He also practiced medicine and
pursued scientific studies, continued his artistic
and literary works, widened his knowledge of
languages and established a school for boys
where he taught several children.

This event was the execution of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal in Bagumbayan, now
called Luneta, in Manila on December 30, 1896. His death meant much more for us, Filipinos.
He gave up his life for his country and for the Filipinos. Because of this, it drew up the
nationalism and pride from most Filipinos.

Exercise 3. As a Filipino, how will you also protect and defend your country? Illustrate and
discuss your answer. (10pts)

As a Filipino, I will continue to fight for the rights of every Filipino and I will
continue to study hard so that in the near future I will be able to protect and defend our
country and voice out what needs to be done to have a peaceful community and country.
