How to Pick the Best Font for Email Marketing

One of the digital marketing strategies that gets questioned often for its capability is
Email Marketing. Email marketing is an important tool to have in a digital marketing
strategy. It is simple in the sense that it doesn’t require any special tools to be
created. It has wide reach and helps to connect and engage with the customers and
potential market in real time basis.
It also allows for targeted marketing and the returns from an email marketing
campaign are is fairly measurable. The data from an email marketing campaign can
provide insights about what is working and which emails need to be dumped.
Emails are also a great way to pack in a lot of options like subscribe, sign up, special
offers, product updates, in one place. It always helps to have all information in front
of the customer to enable them to make a decision/sale.
Because of the numerous benefits email marketing has to offer, it is important to pay
attention to the design, content and aesthetics of an email campaign. Words,
images, colours, all help to put forth a point and make the design attractive.
However, one important tool that generally doesn’t get the attention it deserves is the
font to use or the typography. Fonts carry a visual psychological meaning and have a
major impact on how readers perceive the content. Not all fonts are ideal for email
use. Some are more readable and have more impact than others than the rest.
Here are sone tips to help you choose the best font for an email marketing
campaign:

1. Use Cross Platform Fonts – These are universal fonts that are widely used
and are compatible across all platforms. Some of the fonts that are widely
acceptable across all platforms are Arial, Arial Black, Comic Sans, Courier
New, Georgia, Impact, Charcoal, Lucida Console, Lucida Sans Unicode,
Lucida Grande, Palatino Linotype, Helvetica, Book Antiqua, Palatino,
Tahoma, Geneva, Times, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS, Verdana,
Monaco

2. Use fonts that provide optimum readability and neutrality – There is a


huge selection on fonts available but not all of them may be easy to read and
that too across all platforms. The font used in the email should be easy to
read. Some fonts that offer both readability and neutrality are

a. Georgia
b. Verdana
c. Times New Roman
d. Trebuchet MS
e. Arial
3. Keep Consistency across branding: The typefaces used in the marketing of
a brand often also become part of the identity of a brand. To maintain
familiarity and connection with the readers, it is important to keep the fonts
consistent with all other marketing elements such company name, logo, offer
promos etc.

4. Choose fonts based on the message to be communicated:

a. Serif and Sans Serif fonts work best for formal emails which have
mostly written content as they offer optimum readability to the user.

b. Cursive or Calligraphy fonts emulate handwriting and are not as easy
to read. They are more appropriate for headings to grab attention of the
reader and should not be used for the body of the email

the email a minimal look while also offering maximum readability
