    I. Word Meaning
    1. Niche – a small hollow place
    2. Madder – a reddish- purple substance
    3. Stammered- spoke unclearly because of nervousness

    II. Answer the following:-
    Q1. What did Dami and Ru's family eat for their morning meal ?
    A1. Dami and Ru ate fruits and barley broth for their morning meal .
    Q2. Describe the bathing room in Ru's house .
    A2. The bathing room in Ru’s house was in a corner of the Courtyard . It was a brick line
    room with large earthen vessels filled with water in a corner . A small drain ran along one
    edge of the room leading to a small outlet that carried the water to the main drain on the
    street outside the house .
    Q3 Why did Ru suddenly lost his appetite ?
    A3. Ru suddenly lost his appetite because he realised that instead of welcoming his cousin
    Har at the harbour he would be with the strict head priest completing the rituals for the
    water ceremony.
    III. Read the extract and answer the following:-
    I.‘ On any other day , it would have been an honour and a pleasure to be taking part in the
    ceremony ‘
    (a ) What ceremony is being referred to here ?
    Ans. The ceremony being referred to here is the water ritual at the Great Bath.
    (b ) What was different that day ?
    Ans. It was different on that day because Ru really wanted to welcome the boat from Ur
    with his cousin Har on it . If he participated in the ritual , he would miss welcoming Har and
    would probably enjoy the ritual much less .
    II . “But your mind is clearly somewhere else ,” the old man said ,adjusting his shawl.”
    (a ) Who was the old man? Who was he talking to?
    Ans. The old man was the head priest in Mohenjo -Daro . He was talking to Ru.
    (b ) Was he angry with the person he was talking to ?
    Ans. He was not angry with Ru. He was merely perceptive enough to understand that Ru
    was distracted by news of the boat from Ur.
