A1. Answer these questions.
Ans.1. The children were sent to stay with the Professor away from London due to air-raids
during the war.

Ans.2. Edmund was bad-tempered on the first night at the Professor’s house because he was
tired but pretending not to be tired.

Ans.3. In the house, the children found several unexpected places. There were several long
passages and rows of doors leading to empty rooms. There were many spare bedrooms, a
long room full of pictures and a suit of armour. There was a green room with a harp in it, a
series of rooms lined with large old books and finally a room with nothing in it except a large
wardrobe.

Ans.4. Lucy was attracted to the wardrobe as it was the only piece of furniture in the room.
She felt it would be worthwhile to try the door. When she opened it she found rows of long
fur coats. As she ventured deeper into the wardrobe which led her out into the snowy
woods.

a. Peter said this to Edmund.
b. The house and the surrounding area was going to be a wonderful place for
birds as it had long passages, rows of doors and empty rooms, a kind of place
where birds like to be in.
c. The speaker and the others were living in a far larger house which was creepy
with long passages, rows of doors and empty rooms. It had mountains,
woods around with several species of birds and animals.

Ans. 2.
a. Lucy said these words and she was talking about never ending fur coats.
b. Yes, the wardrobe was enormous. Once the row of coats came to an end,
Lucy found herself out in the woods with snow under her feet and
snowflakes falling through the air.
