Ken: Hi Ella. Where are you?

02

Ella: Hi Ken. We’re in Lisbon in Portugal.

Ken: There’s a picture of you on Facebook in a blue and pink dress. Where are you in that picture? I love the
design on the pavement.
Ella: That’s Rossio Square, a famous town square in Lisbon. There are many beautiful pavements like that
in Portugal.
Ken: Are all the pavements black and white mosaic like that one?
Ella: Many of the pavements are black and white, but some of them have got red in them, too. There are many
different designs, such as the amazing zigzag designs in Santa Cruz. There are pictures of people on some
of the pavements, too.
Ken: The pavements here in Manchester are grey and ugly. The Portuguese pavements look very pretty. Are they
very old?
Ella: Yes, they are. In fact, one of them is about 170 years old.
Ken: Wow! That’s old.
Ella: I know. But unfortunately, in some places they plan to destroy the old pavements and to build modern
pavements instead.
Ken: That’s really sad! Why do people want to destroy those beautiful works of art?
Ella: It’s very expensive to maintain them. Also, they’re difficult to walk on and people often fall, especially when
they are wet from the rain.
Ken: That’s a problem.
Ella: There are some cities with modern pavements at the side of the road for people to walk on next to the old ones.
Ken: That’s a good idea.
