I’m Beginning to See the Light - Jazz Standard
Thank you thank you. Thanks for coming out. Performing in Boyne City is
truly one of my favorite things to do.
I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to freely move about the
cabin. Get another drink. Chat. Enjoy yourselves.

SONG:
Nice ’n’ Easy - Jazz Standard
As, I think, most of you know, I spent 3 years in New York City.
Over the course of those 3 years I held 6 different jobs, as many as three at
the same time. I lived in Brooklyn for almost two years - a block from where
Barbra Streisand went to high school. And about a year in Harlem. Essentially
New York — you can think of it like a flow chart. You have New York City.
That is comprised of 5 boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens,
and Staten Island). Each of those 5 boroughs are broken up into
neighborhoods. For example in Brooklyn, you have Prospect Park, Flatbush
(where I lived), Williamsburgh, BedStuy, Dumbo, the list goes on. Now
Harlem is essentially the area of Manhattan directly above Central Park.
Central Harlem, where I lived, was an incredible neighborhood. The
restaurants were incredible, the entertainment, the life. It was amazing. Not
everything is amazing. This song about Washington Heights - a
neighborhood not far from Harlem - I think encapsulates a few of those
things…
SONG:
Washington Heights, from Fugitive Songs: A Song Cycle
[going to rewrite that ‘ghetto’ line…]
While living in New York, I had an incredible vocal coach. His name was
Michael Pesce. He was part vocal coach, part therapist… he was great. He
also introduced me to some incredible music. Some I’d heard before but not
appreciated, some I’d never heard but fell in love with. I’m going to share a
few of those songs with you now.
SONG:
Lush Life, by Nat King Cole
SONG:
Cheer Up Charlie, from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Can you believe that last song is nestled into Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
factory??? I always skipped that scene when I watched that movie. It’s
quickly become a favorite song of mine.
This next section of the evening I like to call: “Songs I Have Performed That
You Probably Didn’t See”.
My very first gig in NYC was a cabaret at the Laurie Beechman Theater - a
small cabaret venue in the basement of a restaurant. It was 2017.
SONG:
I Chose Right, from Baby
In the summer of 2016, I did my first professional theater gig (AKA, I got paid
for what I did) was Hair at the now defunct DATC. While I didn’t perform this
song in the show, I wanted to sing it because it is, in my opinion, one of the
most perfect musical theaters songs - if not songs in general - called “Frank
Mills”
SONG:
Frank Mills, from Hair
SONG:
Hey There, from The Pajama Game
SONG:
A New Town is a Blue Town, from The Pajama Game
[direct segue into…]
Some sort of dialogue here to segue into next song… not sure.
SONG:
Vessel, by Ben Moss
[should have sheet music next week, but here’s a YouTube link https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=36dFALDmCKw]
Now I get to shamelessly plug my album which is being sold [xxx wherever
it’ll be at the venue xxx]. I’d love to sing a song from the album.
SONG:
The Lady Must Be Mad, from Illyria
SONG:
They Just Keep Moving The Line, from Smash

Sail Away, by Noel Coward
