SUBJECT: Readings in Philippine History ACTIVITY NO.: 2

Make a speech addressing President Rodrigo Duterte which informs about country’s current
socio-political condition.

Mr. President of the Republic of the Philippines;

Your Excellency, Rodrigo Roa Duterte:

I am honored to address you today about our country’s current socio-political conditions that
should be addressed on behalf of all the Filipino people.

No one can argue that the world leaders of today have encountered a myriad of struggles as
2020 kicked in until this present day. The COVID-19 crisis and other relevant economic,
educational, and national security issues have long reigned supreme over our country and have
brought severe horror to each one of us.

The overdue battle with climate change has never ceased. Instead, the problem has grown
tremendously as we continue to make progress. Conflicts in geopolitics among nations have
resurfaced again and again, and developing economies have indeed suffered profoundly as
several restrictions were imposed on conflicting nations.

It is without doubt that the ever-increasing and steadfast inequality significantly contributed to
the pressing issues of the COVID-19 pandemic and other gruelling concerns. The leaders are
the architects of our country, and they spearhead every decision and process the government
undertakes.

I believe the administration must focus and address these fundamental challenges which are
anchored on our country’s economy, healthcare, national safety and security, as well as
government trust. These issues may seem distinct from one another, but truly, they are
interdependent and have a direct effect on each other.

During this pandemic, a plethora of jobs have been abolished. The aftermath of this struggle
should have been extremely horrendous if strong government actions were non-existent.
Governments have been supportive to Filipino businesses and citizens through various
interventions which propelled them towards backing on track.
Despite this positive outcome is the resonance of our country’s increasing debt to various
international banks. Promoting growth among private sectors while diminishing public-sector
debt could be a wise move to address this concern.

The re-emergence of COVID-19 variants will undoubtedly accelerate challenges in the

healthcare system. Hurdles are highlighted as apparent in the inadequacy of medicine and
vaccination supplies as well as facilities to cater to the needs of every affected Filipino citizen.

The government must recalibrate their actions on how to mitigate another emerging health
concern, smart response on virus surges and vaccination rollouts across the cities and
provinces. Achieving a resilient and sustainable healthcare system to minimize possible
detrimental health events should be a top priority.

Aside from these, crimes and violence have escalated in various areas due to lockdowns,
unemployment and desperate citizens during the pandemic. Rallies and protests without social
distancing and mask-wearing intensified the transmission of viruses. Cybercrimes are also
apparent as negotiations and interactions have reached the internet.

With the precedent risks on digital platforms, the government should take a more daring step in
enacting more policies to protect the welfare of digital consumers while also maintaining our
nation’s safety, security, and stability.

Over the trajectory of the pandemic, citizens’ trust in the government fluctuated because of
mishandling of the issue at hand. The government’s inattentiveness to the citizens’ concerns
and needs only erodes their trust in these leaders, as unclear structures, lack of plans, and
interventions are apparent during the emergence of national concerns.

Departments and agencies from the different governmental sectors must work hand in hand to
gain the trust of the masses. Fulfilling their roles and responsibilities with efficiency and
transparency should be evident at all times to give a more trustworthy and competent image of
a leader.

These national challenges exist not only in our country, but in every sovereign state throughout
the world. Leaders may have different ways of tackling these challenges because of their
varying political ideologies and structures, but inclusivity among Filipino society should be
adhered to in generating possible solutions to these problems. The holistic well-being of the
citizens is at stake. Hence, every government action must benefit them.

As the main architect of the sovereign state and spearhead of every governmental action and
process, tackling these socio-political struggles should be prioritized. We, the Filipino citizens,
will be behind you as you create legacies and propel our nation towards the pinnacle of
progress.

Godspeed the Philippines!

Thank you.
