1. FELIX RESURRECCION HIDALGO


(1855-1913)
Kindly read the caption, Amjad. Felix Resurreccion Hidlgo is a great painter who was
born in Binondo, Manila. La Laguna Estigia is one
his famous artworks. It won a gold medal at the
Exposicion General de las Islas Filipinos which was
held in Madrid in 1887.

2. FABIAN DE LA ROSA (1867-1937)

known as the “master of genre” in the Philippines.
His paintings usually depict nature and the typical
activities of people such as farming and planting. In
1904, he received a golden award from the
International Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri for his
painting Transplanting Rice. The City of Manila also
gave him the “Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan”
award in 1968.

Read the textx in the slide, Jydale. Fernando Amorsolo was also from Paco, Manila. He
was known for his paintings and sketches that depict
sceneries in the provinces of the Philippines. He
learned to draw with the guidance of Fabian de la
Rosa, his mother’s cousin. The Making of Philippine
Flag and The First Baptism in the Philippines were
among his famous artworks. In 1972, he was
declared as a National Arts for Painting. He is the
first Filipino who received the National Artist award.

who received the National Artist award.

How he known? He has known for his paintings and sketches that

4. CESAR LEGASPI (1917-1994)

1990 (1990). He was born in Tondo, Manila. He
joined various international exhibits such as the First
Plastic Arts Conference in Rome (1953), Sao Paulo
Biennial in Graphic Arts (1982). He was known for
featuring the less privileged and beggars in his
artwork. Man and Woman and Gadgets are among
his most famous works.

5. MAURO MALANG SANTOS (1928-2017)


Please read the caption, Zainab. Mauro Malang Santos, popularly known as Malang,
was born in Sta. Cruz, Manila. He was a famous
illustrator, cartoonist, and painter. He first became
known through the comics Kosme, The Cop
(Retired) (1947-1965), the first daily English comic
strip published in the Philippines. He also received
various awards for his paintings and sketches. In
1964 he got the Artist of the Year Award from the
Society of Philippine illustrators and Cartoonists. The
City of Manila also gave him the ‘Patnubay ng
Sining at Kalinangan” award in 1981.

Who’s Mauro Malang Santos? He is popularly known as Malang, he was a famous


illustrator, cartoonist and painter.

He is recognized as one of the modernist painters in
the Philippines. He was declared as a National Artist

are the Ten Outstanding Young Men award (1961),

B. SCULPTURE

from molding soil or clay, or from carving stones or
wood. It requires intensive skills to produce exact

1. ISABELO TAMPINCO (1850-1933)


Please read Ariefa Isabelo Tampinco, who was born in Binondo,
Manila, was one of the greatest sculptors in the
country. He designed and sculpted parts and features
of some of the beautiful churches in the Philippines,
such as the façade of Manila Cathedral, the upper
portion of the door of Santo Domingo Church, the
altar of Laoag Church, and woodcarvings in San
MANILA CATHEDRAL Agustin Church. He received various awards,
including a gold medal at the St. Louis World’s Fair
in 1904.

2. EDUARDO CASTRILLO (194-2016)


Please read Muslimin Eduardo Castrillo was born in Santa Ana, Manila. He
was considered as a modern sculptor because of his
use of steel and sheet metal. He received the
Republic Cultural Heritage Award (1971) because of
his contributions in the field of sculpture. An
example of his creations is Consolidated Growth
through Education (1974), which can be found at the
Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).

3. GUILLERMO TOLENTINO (1890-1976)

Guillermo Tolentino, a native of Malolos, Bulacan,
has several works of art found in NCR. He also
designed the national seal of the Philippines. He was
recognized as National Artist for Sculpture in 1973.

4. NAPOLEON ABUEVA (1930-2018)


Read it, Amjad.
Napoleon Abuena, who is also a well-known
sculpture, was a student of Guillermo, Tolintino at
the University of the Philippines (UP). Like
Tolentino, Abuena did not grow up in NCR but a lot
of his artworks can be found in the region. He was
fond of sculpting human figures. Tolentino assigned
him to sculpt a replica of the Oblation, which is at the
University of the Philippines Los Banos 9UPLB). In
1976, he was declared as a National Artist for
Scuplture and was recognized as the “Father of
PhilippineMOdern Sculpture.”
