The topic in the NSTP 2 webinar widened my perspectives on “Basic Life Support And
Basic First Aid Training” with the help of the speakers Mr. Derek Tristan Bisenio and Mr. Raul
Oas, Head Trainer of Naga City Community First Responder Program Office. In reflection on the
webinar, I have the chance to improve my general knowledge about Basic Life Support And
Basic First Aid Training which gives healthcare providers and public safety professionals the
knowledge and skills necessary to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults,
children, and infant patients. First Aid teaches us, students, to recognize and care for a variety of
first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries,
heat, and cold emergencies.
Mr. Derek Tristan Bisenio discusses Basic Life Support which is “The goal of the airway,
breathing, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” and Basic First Aid Training is immediate help
provided to a sick or injured person until professional medical help arrives or becomes available.
The speaker also discusses Objectives, Characteristics of a good first aider, guidelines in giving
emergency care, hindrances in giving first aid, Good Samaritan law, they also provided first aid
management of heart attack and cardiac arrest, etc. The first step in any emergency is the
recognition of the problem and providing help. When in doubt or when someone is seriously
injured or ill, we should always activate the emergency response system by seeking help from
someone or calling the locality’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number. Whether we are at
home, work, or school, know where the first aid kit and the AED are kept and be familiar with
their contents. Know how to activate the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in our area. Mr.
Raul Oas, demonstrate and provided us with how to be aware of any policies in the workplace
regarding medical emergencies. The seven steps of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) involve
checking the scene and the person, calling 911 for assistance, opening the airway, checking for
breathing, chest compressions, delivering rescue breaths, and repeating CPR steps.
In conclusion, First aid is a life-saving technique that people prefer to save lives with
minimal equipment. It is not classified as a medical treatment and cannot be comparable to a
medical professional. It is a special practical and immediate care for an injury or sudden illness
administered until professional medical help is available. Such emergency care provides
self-help in case of injury or illness. First aid training covers care for wounds and sudden illness,
care for specific injuries, accident prevention, and emergency procedures. The purpose of first
aid is to minimize injury and future disability. In serious cases, first aid may be necessary to keep
the victim alive. Now, “Basic Life Support” consists of several medical procedures provided to
patients with life-threatening conditions of the body that cause pain or dysfunction to the person.
All these techniques are focused on helping patients sustain life until more precise medical
treatment can begin. We should know Basic Life Support, or BLS to be always ready in any
situation. Generally refers to the type of care that first-responders, healthcare providers, and
public safety professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory
distress, or an obstructed airway.
