ASSIGNMENT ON PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS

1. If the probability is 0.10 that hockey game will go into overtime,

find the probabilities that among 10 hockey games

a. at most 2 will go into overtime;

b. at least 4 will go into overtime;
c. exactly 1 will go into overtime.

2. If the probability that fluorescent light has a useful life of least500

hours is 0.80. Find the probabilities that among 29 such lights
a. exactly 18 will have a useful life of at least 500 hours
b. at least15 will have a useful life of at least 500 hours
c. at least 2 will not have a useful life of at least 500 hours.

3. A food processor claims that most 10 percent of his jars of instant

coffee contain less coffee than claimed on the label. To test this
claim, 15 jars of his instant coffee are randomly selected and the
contents are weighted, his claim is accepted if fewer than 3 of the
jars contain less coffee than claimed on the label. Find the
probabilities that the food processor’s claim will be accepted when
the actual percentage of his jars containing less coffee than claimed
on the label is

(a) 0.05 (b) 0.10 (c) 0.20

4. If 6 of 24 new buildings in a city violate the building code, what is

the probability that a building inspector, who randomly selects 5 of
the new buildings, will catch

a. none of the new buildings that violate the building code;

b. exactly one of the new buildings that violate the building code;
c. exactly two of the new buildings that violate the building code ;
d. at least three of the new buildings that violate the building code.
5. A large shipment of books contains 2 percent with imperfect
bindings. Use the Poisson approximation of the binomial
distribution to determine the probability that among 750 books
(randomly selected from the shipment).

a. at most 15 will have imperfect binding;

b. exactly 15 will have imperfect bindings;
c. at least 10 will have imperfect bindings;

6. In a given city, 5 percent of all drivers get at least one parking ticket
per year. Use the Poisson approximation of the binomial distribution to
determine that among 70 drivers (randomly chosen in this city)

d. exactly 4 will get at least parking ticket during the next year;
e. at least 2 will get at least one parking ticket during the next year
;
f. anywhere from 4 to 8, inclusive, will get at least one parking
ticket during the next year;

7. Given that the switchboard of a consultant’s office receives on the

average 1.0 calls per minute, find the probabilities that

(a) in a given minute there will be at least one incoming call;

(b) between 10.00 A.M. and 10.02 A.M. there will be exactly 2 incoming
calls;
(c) during an interval of 4 minutes there will be at most 3 incoming calls.

8. .At a checkout counter, customers arrive at an average rate of 1.5 per

minute. Find the probabilities that ;

(a) at most 4 will arrive in any given minute;

(b) at least 3 will arrive during an interval of 2 minutes;
(c) at most 15 will arrive during an interval of 5 minutes;
9. Specifications for a certain job call for washers with in inside
diameter of inch. If the inside diameters of the
washers supplied by a given manufacturer may be looked upon as
random variable having the normal distribution with mean =0.302
inch and standard deviation 0.003, what percentage of these washers
will meet specifications?

10 . A soft drink machine is regulated so that it discharges an average

of 300 ml per cup. If the amount of drink is normally distributed
with standard deviation equal to 20 ml.

 What fraction of the cups will contain more than 325 ml?
 What is the probability that a cup contains between 285 and 335 ml.
 What is the probability that a cup will contain exactly 300 ml?
 How many cups will likely overflow if 340 ml cups are used for the
next 2000 drinks?
 Below what value do we get the smallest percent of the drinks
 Cups of what size should be used if we want one out of 1000 cups to
overflow?

11. The life of a batter is normally distributed with a mean life of 30

months and standard deviation of 3 months. If the guaranteed life is
2 years, find the number of complaints expected out of 1000 batteries
supplied. How long a guarantee should be offered if the company is
willing to replace one percent of the batteries free of cost?
Find expected profit if selling price of each battery is Rs 500/ and a
cost price is Rs 450/- and in all 2000 batteries sold in a particular
month.

12. A manufacturer knows that on an average 2 percent of the electric

toasters which he makes will require repairs within 90 days after
they are sold. Use the normal approximation of the binomial
distribution to determine the probability that among 1200 of these
toasters at least 30 will require repairs within the first 90
days after they are sold.
13. Amount of money daily withdrawn from a particular ATM is a
random variable which is normally distributed with a mean value
of AED 80,000 and standard deviation of AED 6000. Determine
the probability that the amount of money withdrawn on a given day
is :

( a ) More than AED 90, 000

( b ) Less than AED 65,000

( c ) Between 65000 and 90 000 ( AED )

( d ) Determine the amount of money that should be put in the ATM
