DEDICATION
TUSUBIRA RONALD. This field work report is dedicated to my inspirations of
social work profession, my lecturers and my farther Mr.BIRUNGI Godfrey who
have supported me in my academic Journey and all my teachers from primary to
High school who have also equally contributed to this cause..
The almighty God deserves full gratitude for having guided me to this far. It
wouldn’t have been to my making but it’s very possible that I am still moving
forward because the Almighty is still protecting me.
Mukono district administration thank you very much for your supportive assistance
rendered to me during my internship period. Giving me an opportunity to work in
this Agency was as well a blessing. I wouldn’t have learnt to this far if you hadn’t
granted me and opportunity and continued in guiding me. Thank you.
Amidst the “New World Order” setting brought about by the COVID19 pandemic,
the faculty of social sciences at Uganda Christian University had to blend with the
current situation and persisted to make my academic journey continue. Guiding
materials that were provided to students through online approach were
substantially paramount and led to satisfaction of intern ship of students in their
respective Agencies. Once again, the faculty of Social Sciences, my gratitude is
extended to you. Mukono district Administration, you endlessly paved a way for
me to continue with my intern ship in a secure way since COVID19 was a threat.
Thank you for your positivity strategies.
1.0) INTRODUCTION.
Chapter one encompasses the background of Mukono District headquarters and
field work placement as a requirement for the award of a Bachelor’s degree in
social work and social administration at Uganda Christian University. This
chapter also includes learning objectives, the vision, mission, principles, values
goals, and the structure of Mukono district headquarters and for the internship
as well.
In this context field work attachment is a field based practical training that helps in
preparing trainees or internees. This is done to enable one gain and improve on the
practical working skills and experiences, through giving opportunities to apply
class knowledge theory into practice. This accelerates training a student the basic
ways of handling social official responsibilities that at times includes office work
and field assessment work. It is upon this that I had interest in working with the
community. To have this achieved, working with the District headquarters Mukono
was my priority so as to attain the basic community handling skills that I need as a
social work student.
iii. To enhance and strengthen Uganda Christian university social worker students
with different stake holders
Mukono district has a total area of 2986.47 sq. km, lies in the central
region of Uganda
Sharing borders with buikwe district in the east, kayunga along river sezibwa
In the north, luweero in the North West, Kampala and wakiso in the in the south
west,
Tanzania – lake Victoria in the south with the island of Buvuma district.
Mukono central division serves as the administrative and commercial
Centre other
The northern part of the district is flat but the southern region consists of
sloping land with great many undulations; 75% of the land is less than 60o in
slope.
Hydrology.
Water bodies cover a total area of 1,181.73km2, out of which open water bodies
cover 396.3km2 (rivers and the lakes) and wetlands/swamps cover 151km2. Hence,
water bodies constitute 40% of the total area of the District.
Relief, Climate
Most of Mukono District lies on a high plateau (1000-1300) above sea level with
some areas along Sezibwa River below 760m above sea level, drained by rivers of
Sezibwa and Musamya.
There for this kind of favourable weather enables mukono district in food and cash
crop production , horticulture on a commercial basis. Existing commercial farms
in the District also provide a good background for experience sharing for those
investors who want to venture in such areas.
Mukono District Council the supreme organ, headed by the LCV Chairman who is
supported by an Executive of 3 members, 5 Policy/ Sector Committees that
deliberate policy matters and make recommendations to the full Council of 30
Council-ors of which 12.are female and18 male .
There are also statutory bodies, which are mandated by law to carry out specific
roles and responsibilities to ensure effective and efficient service delivery. These
include:
There is also an office of the Resident District Commissioner, which represents the
President in the District and ensures that both National and Local priorities are
given due consideration and are implemented in an accountable manner.
In addition, there are several CBOs, CSOs, NGOs and members of the private
sector who work together with the district council to deliver services to the
communities.
The Technical Planning Committee Chaired by the CAO undertakes the overall co-
ordination of programs with the Planning Unit as the secretariat.
It is upon the above strategy that I appreciated the zeal of Mukono district
headquarters which accelerated my interest of interning at the district
headquarters so that I can get an opportunity of working on community
based social problems as per allocated by my agency supervisor.
The mandate and mission requires the Department to target vulnerable groups of
society who are acutely affected by poverty, through poverty alleviation policies
and programs.
1.5.1 DEPARMENTAL MISSION STATEMENT
Working towards social and economic transformation of the vulnerable and
marginalized groups as well as the entire society in the Sub Counties for
sustainable and gender responsive development thus making the community a
better place to live in by encouraging the youths, women and PWDs to participate
in council development activities”.
Gender main-streaming,
Matters in analysing planning.
Implementation of emerging activities.
This is done in line with National Gender Policy and subsequent guidance from the
District and Central Government line Ministry.
Literature review.
1 was able to read various books including the Local government Act, the
ministry of Lab our, Gender and social development. (MLGSD) so many
others. I his guided me on the various laws and ways of conduct as a BGIR
student, more so in finding social problem in the community.
Consultation.
I was also able to utilize the chance made use of my supervisor to obtain some of
the unclear information that I come upon in the field, either in the office or outside
office. Also my colleagues and the co-workers in other offices in case needed.
Observation.
I made use of observing and analyzing structures and activities taking place
during my field work for example during field around the agency I associated
with some business men, observed farming activities, buildings and so many
others, within the office 1 observed office equipment like computers, tables and
chairs plan books, printer and others required for work in the office.
CHAPTER TWO
2.0 INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the position occupied by the student in the organization, oath
taking, duties and responsibilities, understanding the different directorate under the
government, and relationship, work team and its composition, working
relationships among team members and finally the activities undertaken during the
intern-ship
Orientation
During the first week all internees were introduced to the staff members in the
different offices. All internees we had a meeting with the supervisor in which work
was introduced , we were given rules and schedules. Most of us were placed under
the department of community based service. Then others were placed under
rehabilitation department. We got to know what community based service does and
rehabilitation as well. Who heads the different departments and their daily
activities and duties, the various steps taken when making community based
service and disposal of any item and the roles and responsibilities in the
department of Community Based service.
Transect walk.
During the first week we as internees had a transect walk to the different offices of
different. Here we were assigned to move around the different offices and drawing
a map that leads to the different offices. This includes the municipal council as
well.
Since we as internees used to have of assignments for every week, every Monday
was the day for all of us to present our reports on the different activities assigned to
us by the supervisor.
In the first as well our supervisor required us to search and read about the historical
background of Mukono district. This included when and how the district came into
existence, the first leaders to the present ones. After we had to write down our
findings and present to him in the next meeting
We as the the internees had a binding relationship with each other due to
numerous ideas shared. Our relationship with the staff was also identified as well
due to the fact that we had to seek for assistance from some of them.
Timely accomplishment of the tasks since work was done as a group there was
an assurance that it would be completed at the right time since every one
participated in a given task.
Collective understanding since most activities ware done as a group this helped
to create a platform to come up with identical solutions to the challenges as
work was being done.
Idea generation since two heads are better than one. Team work improved the
presentation of more ideas because we as internees had different perspectives
about a given assignment or activity.
I carried out difference activities in the school and they include the following;
ORTH TAKING.
This act is taken by all the public officers and employees of the government before
taking upon the discharge of his duties, take an oath or affirmation to uphold and
defend the constitution ; that he will bear true faith and allegiance to it ; obey the
laws , legal orders and decrees.
Under assessment and verification we visited different groups that had requested
grants from the government as a means of helping them to alleviate poverty. Our
responsibility was to find out if the groups existed, their plan after receiving the
money, how they got to know about the grant. Meeting and interviewing the
different group members as well as looking at their respective executives.
On 7th of August I conducted an sexual reproductive health session with the youth
from various parts of the country. The session was intended to empower
adolescents with information and services on sexual and reproductive health
including family planning , reducing preventable maternal deaths, as well as
providing the appropriate information age information on sexual reproductive
health to the youth and adolescents in a COVID 19 period .They were able to
know about the session through the advertisement that I made through my social
media platforms. I conducted two sessions first one began in the mourning at
exactly 9:30am where I had a turn up of 30 members. And the other session was in
the evening with a turn up of only 20 members there by making a total of 50
members whom I was able to sensitize about the issue. The majority were girls
who made up a total of 35 members and 15 boys . I was able to discuss a lot of
issues with them including how best they could protect themselves during this
period of corona virus.
i. Theory
Socialism theory: In this theory everything is for everyone and everybody is equal,
I was able to witness this during my internship at the local government Mukono
where the local government funded the youths organizations be it the disabled
youths or the health living youths and this was a sign of socialism where there was
no discrimination
ii. Skills.
Advocacy.
Communication.
This was also another vital skill that I got a chance to utilize, the ability to speak
and write clearly and concisely is a great benefit to social workers especially those
dealing with individuals, groups that struggle to understand things. When we went
out in the filed we met many groups as mentioned in the previous tests some of
these groups lacked enough information about the processes through with these
government grants are provided. So by the use of my good communication skills I
was able to inform these people and how best they could too apply for the grants.
Social group work .this is a process in which the individuals in the social group are
helped by a professionally qualified worker, who guides their interactions through
planned activities so that they may be able to relate themselves with others and
find growth opportunities in accordance to their needs and capacities towards the
noble end of the individual group and community development. While at Mukono
local government I was able to meet this method through the various groups that
we met such as Mulungi destiny family, katosi fish group and other were able to
provide appropriate knowledge on how best these people could grow their
respective industries which was all done under the presidential programme
“EMYOOGA” aimed to alleviate Ugandans from poverty.
Community organisation
Chapter three.
.3.0 EVALUATION ON THE FILD ATTACHMENT
To a greater extent I and my fellow internees were able to complete most duties
and responsibilities assigned to us by our supervisor in the within the demarcated
time and reported back to him as he had instructed us during the meeting before we
went for the given task.
Report writing skills. During the field attachment, I was able to gain acquire
and perfect my skills in report writing due to the weekly reports that we were
required to write as internees reporting about the field activities for every week.
Our supervisor would collect us were we had gone wrong thereby perfecting
our skills
Planning skills. This was one of the most vital skilled that I captured during
my field work attachment. I was able to acquire this through the preparations
that I used to have before we would go out in the field, i and my fellow team-
mates had to prepare questionnaires, the transport means ,the first floor
speakers and many other
Office practice and management skills. These were acquired through a duty
and responsibility of being left in office to manage everything that was
required to be done, organizing daily visitors book, organizing office, arranging
office equipments and weekly report writing
ICT skills. These were acquired through the numerous reports that we had to
write and present to the supervisor every Monday during the meeting.
Time management skills and work ethics. Through the culture for every
employee and internees to arrive at exactly8:00am. I was able to acquire this
kind of skill as it required me to get up early and prepare my self in time.
public speaking. This skill was acquired through orienting of the visitors that
would visit the office, and also through the field work activities that we had
weekly these required us to set up meetings with the group members of the
respective groups.
Interviewing skill. This was one of the techniques that we used to collect data
and information from the field for example we would ask the community
members about the various economic activities in the given area, area of
investment and other questions
Team work. Self help and one to one assistance knowledge was acquired by
everyone of us for effective completion of the assigned duties and
responsibilities. Every time we would go out in the field I and my team-mates
had to divide the tasks and every had a part to handle ]
Transport barriers.
Transport also became a challenge due to the closure of public transport means, the
covid 19 restrictions we found our selves having to foot to some of the places in
order to meet the groups assigned to us
Covid 19 restrictions .we were also challenged by the covid 19 restriction for
example when they closed public transport means and bodabodas it became
hard for us to reach some groups that had been assigned to us for verification
hence making it almost impossible to complete the given task.
Afraid to ask questions. i was afraid to ask questions at first since it was my
first time into the field there fore I had a very hard time more so during
interviewing of people who were older than us
Ability to work with different people (team work). I was able to work with
different people with different abilities as well as organisational goal, one to
one assistance concept.
Excellent verbal and written skills. I was able to acquire this through the
numerous reports that we had to type and present to the supervisor every week
and then for the verbal was through the interviews and meeting that we had
organised with different groups of people and community mobilizations.
Planning skills. I was able to achieve these through the duties and
responsibilities that we were assigned to go to the field. They required us to
plan on how were going to handle our activity this was done in order to
minimize the would be done mistakes.
Interviewing skills these were acquired during the time we went out to the
field and we had one to one talks with some the people in the respective groups
that we had gone to meet.
CHAPTER FOUR.
This chapter indicates the conclusion and recommendation written down due to the
time that I spent at the internship placement. They are as a result of them
experience I gained during this time.
Conclusions.
My stay at MDLG was really fruitful as expected. i was exposed to many social
work knowledge and practices in real community setting , the employment setting
and flow of power in the different sectors. Above all I got a chance to really apply
some of the skills, theories and other important basics of social work practice
RECOMENDATION.
Its such a pleasure with the time spent at MLG that i have acquired skills for
example communication, skills, I have learnt the right procedures to effective
advocacy but also got chance to make connections that i can refer to in case of any
inquires and open doors to opportunities in various sectors.
