Agricultural Map of the State of Madhya Pradesh Part II

1 Introduction

Economy of India and the state of Madhya Pradesh is so deeply influenced by agriculture, which
is the livelihood of the major population. Agriculture is so closely interwoven with the human and
natural environment, that any change in it may affect ecological, social and political systems.
The state of Madhya Pradesh requires an atlas of agriculture for a reform in the field of
agriculture and allied sciences to stand a chance of saving nature, preventing the worst effects
of climate change and reviving small farms and rural regions. The economy changes animatedly
as of society. Transformation in agriculture affects farmers, society and the political system
because of its close association with food, climate, nature and livelihood. Therefore it is
imperative for society to provide accurate direction for development of agriculture. A radical
change in Agriculture Policy is crucial to double the farmers’ income, accomplish climate
commitments, prevent the dangerous consequences of environmental degradation and improve
rural life and animal welfare.

The presentation of information on agriculture in illustrated form will help researchers, teachers,
students, policy makers, agri-entrepreneurs and businessman to take correct decision in
minimum time that will be socially acceptable and globally just. All the information of agriculture
in the form of map is meager for the state of Madhya Pradesh. Therefore an attempt has been
made by Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur to illustrate data on agriculture
with the help of map to assist the end users. The contributors believe that it will facilitate to
protect the natural resources and biodiversity, and promote sustainable use of resources and
with fair trade.

The district wise data on area, production, yield, land use, irrigation etc. were collected for the
year 2017-18 from official website of Commissioner of Land Records and Settlement, Madhya
Pradesh (http://landrecords.mp.gov.in). Data for district wise fertilizer sale for Madhya Pradesh
was obtained from MFMS portal (www.mfms.nic.in) for year 2017-18 on 13/11/2018. The data
for district wise Forest cover was obtained from India State of Forest Report 2017 (Table 9.15.7,
page 228-229). The time series data for India and Madhya Pradesh on area, production and
yield of several crops was accessed from official website of Directorate of Economics and
Statistics (https://eands.dacnet.nic.in/) for years 2000-01 to 2016-17. The R software version
3.5.1 (Feather Spray) was used in creating maps. Within the many layers of GIS,
Districts/Census_2011/2011_Dist.shp was accessed to create Madhya Pradesh map with
districts in it.
