Inspection & Testing

1.6.1 INSTALLATION OF UNDERGROUND VITRIFIED CLAY PIPEWORK

a. Setting Out and Excavation

i) The sub-contractor’s site personnel in liaison with the main contractor’s

surveyor shall establish the alignment of the pipe trench

ii) The routes of pipelines shall be pegged out

iii) The trench shall be excavated to the depths intended

iv) The bottom of the trench shall be graded so that the pipe invert slopes
evenly between the adjacent invert levels

v) The trench shall be excavated to provide for the necessary working space

vi) Where pipes are to be laid on a concrete bed, extra depth shall be
excavated to receive the concrete

vii) All trenches shall be vertical sides, except for depth exceeding 4.0 meter
the ground above 4.0 meter level shall be removed to allow for working
space of excavation. This is because the maximum depth of excavation
by excavator is approximately 4.0 ~5.0 meters only.

viii) Unless specially specified or due to site constraint, the trenches shall be
excavated to the widths given in the table below:

Clear width of trench for

External pipes Maximum trench
backfill with selected
diameter, mm width
earth or sand
150Ø and below OD + 300mm 0.900m
200Ø ~250Ø OD + 400mm 1.150m
300Ø ~350Ø OD + 500mm 1.140m
400Ø ~450Ø OD + 600mm 1.300m

ix) Trench excavation shall be commenced and completed as soon as

reasonably practicable after the pipes have been laid and jointed holes
may be left unrefilled until the joints have been inspected/tested.

b. Bedding

i) As per consultant drawing.

c. Laying and Joining of Vitrified Clay Pipes

i) The trench shall be bedded with 20mm crusher run before laying pipes.
Thickness of bedding is shown in table below.

Pipe diameter, mm 100Ø 150Ø 230Ø 300Ø

Min. bed thickness, mm 100 100 150 150

ii) Lift and lowered the pipe into the trench carefully and place onto the
compacted crusher run bed

iii) Clean the socket joints and spigot end of pipe

iv) Apply a little lubricant on inside of socket joint

v) Place the rubber ring onto the spigot end, aligned the pipes and push
home the spigot end of the socket
