Relate a case of moral dilemma in any level- personal, organizational or systemic and answer the
following questions:
What is the case about?
- There is a student whose name is Joseline and they have a board exam this coming
Thursday. She is very ambitious and determined to be a doctor someday. Joseline has so
many friends that can do studying and partying. One night, before the examination day of
Joseline, her friends invited her to a bar just to enjoy, take a rest for all the studying, and
also to celebrate the birthday of one of her friends. She is tired from all the sleepless
nights and the everyday drinking of coffee. Joseline wanted to have time for her friends,
but at the same time she just wanted to throw her body to the bed and take a rest for the
whole night. She cannot make a decision, because she both wanted it to happen on the
same time and day.
Why do you think that the case is an example of a moral dilemma?
- Moral dilemma is simply defined as an action or in the given situations there would
always be an option or choices to make, even though an individual knows the right and
wrong. This is an example of a moral dilemma case, because Joseline is torn between her
choice of enjoying with her friends or just being at home for the whole day. She cannot
decide properly, because she wanted both of her choices to happen.
What type of moral dilemma is the case?
- The case can be an epistemic moral dilemma, as it should require the knowledge of an
individual to choose the right decision. The individual should know the consequences if
he/she made this kind of decision. Yes, she will enjoy it if she goes out with her friends,
but she should know that she has a board exam the next day. If Joseline will choose to
stay at home, her friends will think of her as a killjoy for their group. She cherishes her
friends so much and is a doctor too. This is where it can also be an ontological moral
dilemma, because both being a doctor and her friends has a great value to her. In the
options that she made, she doesn't know if she will make the right choice or not.
What will the concepts of voluntariness, freedom and responsibility contribute to resolve
the moral dilemma?
- For the voluntary, it should be an absolute good, because she should know what action
should be done. And, that is she should take a rest before the examination day. Joseline’s
future is depending on it. Friends are everywhere, but true friends that will help you to
reach the top is the one she should treasure the most. For freedom, it should be moral
freedom, she should do what is right and morally correct. She should ot think twice to
take a rest, because she should help her body, mind, and soul to prepare for the
examination day. For the responsibility, it is supposed to be freedom, because in every
decision that Joseline will make she should be responsible. If she chooses to have fun
with her friends, she will get drunk, not think straight the next morning, she will be lazy
and her head will be heavy. Joseline’s schedule for her board exam will be ignored and
she will wait again for how many months to take a board exam. All of her sleepless
nights and efforts will be useless. If she chooses to take a rest, she will have a peaceful
mind, will be on time to wake up, and all of her efforts will be paid off. An individual
should be always mindful in every decision that he/she will make, because this will bring
or carry as you grow up.
