Kinematics In1-Dimension Lab Report

1. The Abstract of my lab report

In the lab, we decided to use an aluminum ruler track to test the motion of the model car

under two kinds of condition. One of them was to push the car into a uniform velocity, and

the another was to push the car against the gravity and let it come back. The used of motion

detector helps us to figure out the velocity of the car and the displacement as well, and we put

it in the left end of the ruler. In the end of the ruler, there was a black with magnet which

prevented the car to crash over from the track. Also, the Logger Pro helped us to collect the

data automatically including the velocity, time, and displacement. The aluminum ruler should

be flat and balance because it might affect the data that we got.

2. The introduction in my lab report:

In this experiment, we mainly focus on the relationship or the connection between the

acceleration which was provided the hand-made force, and the velocity (displacement). We

will be clearer on the kinematics terms and have a better understanding on the equation that

related to these terms because the car’s motion shows the pattern that how different factors

affected it. From my perspective, the question that raised in my mind was that how the

physics term connected with these experiments that we have done.

3. The methods in my Lab Report:

We have done two of the experiments:

The first experiment was about the uniform velocity act on the car, and we needed

several equipment to do this experiment. First off, we needed to put the aluminum ruler on

the two edge of the table and to apply the blocker with magnet in the left end of the ruler. In

addition, we needed to put the motion detector in the right end of the ruler and connected

with our laptop in order to get the data in every time. After installed all of the equipment, we

apply the model car on the track and let our partner to accelerated it into a uniform velocity,

at the same time, the motion detector was collecting data too. (Fig. 1.1)

Fig.1.1.

Our group have collected three series of data to make sure the accuracy in the physics

experiment.

The second experiment was mostly same with the previews one, but there was a slope in

the aluminum track. Therefore, the car would be experienced the gravity of the earth. The

first step was to make an slope, we decided to use an equipment that could rise the one side of

the aluminum ruler, so there will be an slope on the aluminum track, and according to the

trigonometric function, we could know the angle that contact with the surface of the table. To

change the height of the equipment, we could test different data for different angle as a result.

Our group have collected three series of data to make sure the accuracy in the physics

experiment.

For the first experiment, we figure out that if the velocity is constant (except 0), the

displacement will increase constantly.

Fig.1.2

According to the Fig.1.2, these was data that we took in the experiment, we could see that

the velocity was constant, the position increase in a constant speed. For the second

experiment, we found that the bigger the contact angle with the surface of the table, the faster

the changing direction of the velocity. (Left one is Fig.1.3, right one is Fig.1.4)

As the result of our data Fig.1.3,1.4, in the first figure, the surface-contact angle was

2.2270degree, and the another was 3.2750degree which provided the result.

5. The Discussion in my Lab Report:

As I have mentioned in the last part of my report, the first experiment will have a linkage

with the physics concept velocity and the displacement. According to the Serway, Fauqhn -

Holt McDougal Physics, the average velocity equals to the change in displacement/ time

interval (Fig.1.5)

Fig.1.5

we could rewrite as the average velocity times time interval equals to the change in

displacement, so if the average velocity is constant, the displacement will be proportional to

the time changed. Although the velocity seems decreasing, because of the air friction and

some factors which will affect the result, and if we could do the experiment in the vacuum

condition, it will have helped us to gain the data with more accuracy. In another word, the

graph will be look like the Fig1.2.

For the second experiment, the experiment has connections with the physics terms force,

gravity, acceleration, and the velocity. The result that I have made in the result part, was

based on the gravity that the model car afforded. As the contact angle (with the surface of the

table) increase, there will be more gravity that acted on object. According to the NASA.gov:

“the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth”. As a consequence, if the

contact angle (with the surface of the table) was getting bigger, the car will have a force

which attract it to the center of the earth which are the vertically downward. The experiment

could help us to estimate the gravity (acceleration of the free fall), and the suggestions for

improving the lab is mostly same with the previews one, if we can do the experiment in the

vacuum, the data will become much more accurate.

The data that I have compared to other group, it was slightly different because of the

measurement error, and the experiment that we expected is in the ideal condition which did

not have any factor which will affect the result. For the question that I have mentioned in the

introduction part, the physics terms like velocity or displacement could be shown by certain

kind of facilities, just like the equipment that we have used in these experiments. There are

different facilities that we could use to assist us to get a better on the physics term, such as

microscope, oscilloscope, energy dispersive X-ray detector and so on.

6. The conclusion of my lab report:

After this experiment, I had a better understanding on the kinematics concept such as the

velocity, acceleration and the displacement. Also, during the research part, I have learned the

concept of gravity more deeply. In the experiment part, our instructor taught us how to get the

data as accurate as possible and to arrange the experiment in a tidy way. In addition, in the

writing part, I gained abundant of knowledge about how to do research both in the internet

and in our textbook as well. Beside these, before I wrote my lab report, I have done a group

of analyses which I have not done them before.
