Lesson 8 – Partnerships with Families

Lesson 8 Content:
This Lesson relates to Chapter 10; Families in Transition, in your course
text.
This can be a sensitive chapter; it discusses significant events that some
families face. I had mentioned, when we began working on the
Community Resource Project, that this Chapter may be helpful in
gaining insight on how your selected family may be feeling, as well as
the Role of the Educator and how we can support these families.

Instructions:

Take your time in reading through the pages highlighted in the lesson
link and again for you below.

 When a Child is Hospitalized – pgs. 383-384 (read Inside Look on


page 383 as well)
 Death in the Family – pgs. 384-387 (look at table 10.2 on page
386)

 Families with children who have special needs p. 375


 Chronic illness and disability p. 381
 Families dealing with natural disaster p. 388
 Moving p.389
 Families living with substance abuse p. 392
 Shelter life and homelessness p. 394
 Families living with abuse and family violence p. 397
 Families with incarcerated parents p.412

Part 1 - After you have read through the different topics (When a child
is hospitalized, Death in the family, Moving etc.) I would like you to
highlight two that stood out to you and why. (4 marks)

Part 2 - Why do you believe having a strong Partnership with Families


could really benefit the Family, Child and yourself during these difficult
times? (2 marks)

Part 3 – What could you add to the childcare environment that may
help a child work through these unsettling events? (think of different
items that could go in the dramatic play area, or a specific type of
sensory item). (2 marks)
(Minimum 2-3 items listed with an explanation for each - 4 sentences
minimum)
**Remember, just listing the item or artifact with no explanation will
only achieve half marks.

Part 4 – Highlight a total of 2 Community Resources (one for each of


your selected topics) from Help Yourself Through Hard Times booklet
that may benefit that Family? Provide at least 1 reason why you chose
that Community Resource for each of the Families you focused on. (link
below) (2 marks)
(1 mark for the 2 resources and 1 mark for why you chose them)
/10 marks total
