Answer the following questions briefly: 25 points

1. What is Biotechnology? 5 points

Biotechnology is technology that utilizes living organisms, biological systems or

their parts to make and develop a new or different product. Traditional processes uses
these organisms in their natural forms, while the modern process is making use of its
more advanced modification in general.

2. How is Biotechnology relevant to you as a student and as a person? 5 pts

The relevance of biotechnology for me as a student is that I am able to learn and

discover this type of technology so I can realize how much science has helped the world
and its people in different fields and aspects. Biotechnology is the reason that
technology has developed rapidly in medicine, food, environment and more. It helps us
me as a person to live better, healthier, safer, and more conveniently in this world.

3. How can Biotechnology be beneficial? Cite at least 4 examples. 5 points

Biotechnology has helped in the creation of different drugs and vaccines, like
AIDS and Alzheimer’s disease. It helps making safe and healthier foods, like “golden
rice” which is rich in vitamin A. Plastics made out of corn and other plants can now be
made to help sustain the environment. It helps increase food production by enhancing
crops like soybeen, cotton to resist insects and herbicides.

4. How can Biotechnology be detrimental? Cite at least 4 examples? 5pts

The lack of genetic diversity causes an all-or-nothing approach. The processes

can help improve crop yields and medical science, but it will come at a cost if it does not
work. It will all go to waste and even threaten a species’ survival. Also, scientists do not
know the outcome of what may happen. They’re facing a lot of risks, like tinkering with a
genetics of a person with a disorder. It also has the risk of turning human life to a
commodity, since making alterned DNA sequences for profit can minimize human or
even plant life to profit potential. Lastly, this technology is also capable of making
weapons that can harm masses. Just how medicines can be made to improve health,
diseases can also be used wrongly as weapons.

5. How can Biotechnology help alleviate the problem in terms of Covid-19

pandemic? 5pts

Just as how biotechnology has helped for years, it can also help our situation
during the pandemic. In the medical field, it can help create different vaccines or
medicine to lessen the risk of people catching the virus or helping them to be immune to
it. In terms of food, the products they are able to create to help people be healthier will
be able to keep them safe and physically strong while there is a pandemic going on,
especially those with comorbidities.
