WORKSHEET 3

1. Discuss the need for biotechnology education in our School Curriculum.

On the one hand, education should guide students to a basic awareness of the methodologies,
achievements, and implications of biotechnology. On the other hand, based on this understanding, it
should assist pupils in making their own, justified conclusions about this topic and acting accordingly.
Biotechnology plays a significant role to us, not just a subject in school but, part of our lives as a human
being. This is to help us expand our knowledge when it comes to living organisms, the combination of
things and organisms applies if you want to make a new kind of thing or subject. We also know through
extensive evolutionary and biological research that one medicine for many people is not the greatest
therapeutic option. We are working toward personalized genetic medication to treat everyone more
efficiently as Biotechnology emerges as the new era. Diseases that were formerly treated merely for
symptoms, such as arthritis, are now treated for the cause with biologics such as antibodies, resulting in
a significantly improved quality of life.

2. Discuss the opportunities Philippines as a nation will derive from biotechnology.

According to my research, the Philippines continues to be a regional biotechnology leader,

having been the first Asian country to authorize the planting of a genetically modified (GE) crop and is
working on a regulatory framework for GE animals. In terms of value, the Philippines was the 12th
largest market for agricultural and allied products exported by the United States in 2017, with exports of
billion dollars. With approximately million dollars in sales, it was the largest soybean meal market in the
United States. The Philippines was also the 12th largest market for US exports in terms of value. In 2017,
$964 million was spent on consumer-oriented items, the majority of which contain GE-derived
components. Exports are expected to surpass 2017 levels in 2018, with soybean meal sales reaching new
highs. As a developing country, above information are reliable enough to be proud of our workers and as
a nation. In this setting, we can see how improved our environment is despite, of being a small and
populated country. The assurance of enough crops and plants enables us to have enough stock and
restock other nation like US. In conclusion, improving our life through biotechnology is definitely
necessary and convenient, so rather than patronizing others work, let’s advance and market our very
own product.
3. Name and explain four human factors that can hinder the effective implementation of biotechnology
in the Philippines.

Health Risks, Environmental Risks, Risks to Biodiversity and Socioeconomic Risks are the factors
that can hinder the effective implementation of biotechnology. Assessing and limiting the risk of food
allergies in genetically altered food is one of the potential health concerns of genetically improved
species. Food allergies may now be identified, characterized, and minimized using new biotechnology-
based technologies. Genetically modified crops and foods, as well as the risk of allergens linked with
them, have become a global issue, particularly in industrialized countries. The potential for traits from
genetically improved plants to spread to the same or related species of plants, the build-up of resistance
in insect populations, and the potential threat to biodiversity posed by widespread monoculture of
genetically improved crops are all risks that policymakers and regulators must consider. In some places,
threats to biodiversity and animals are serious concerns. The hazards connected with the potential
formation of new selection pressures as a result of the introduction of genetically modified organisms
into the ecosystem must be carefully assessed. The potential impact of genetically modified creatures on
biodiversity is especially concerning, as selection pressures influence the ecosystem's species makeup.
These issues should be investigated further, particularly in terms of the behavior of genetically modified
creatures in the open environment. There is a danger that modern science would overlook the demands
of the impoverished. Biotechnology is merely one instrument for solving food security and poverty
issues. Biotechnology must be combined with proper policy and other traditional research and
development activities. Biotechnology's positive and negative effects on who and what is affected, as
well as how they are affected, should be tracked over time. In the future, monitoring the impact will
provide recommendations to legislators.

4. Elucidate the challenges and limitations of biotechnology.

One of the primary drawbacks of employing biotech products is the substantial health concerns
that arise when unwanted biological agents are accidentally introduced into the human food supply. You
may be astonished to learn that synthetic growth hormone bovine is used to create one-third of the
total milk supply in some nations. There are no scientific studies that show that human growth hormone
use is safe. The lack of genetic variation is yet another major issue with biotechnology. Agriculture
biotechnology methods can boost crop yields and advance medical science, but they come at the cost of
a genetic bottleneck. If the method fails to provide beneficial results, the entire harvest or medical
treatment will be a complete waste, posing a threat to the species' survival. Biotech pharmaceuticals
can be used to treat certain diseases and illnesses, such as cancer and the AIDS virus. The cost of biotech
drugs makes it impossible for ordinary people to benefit from them. There are a number of medications
that will set you back thousands of dollars for each dose.
