Step 1
Internet or Traditional Classrooms

With advancements in technology, some students have chosen to complete their

schoolwork through the Internet, rather than in traditional classrooms. Those who support a
traditional classroom approach to learning argue that it provides more of an opportunity for
students to interact with the teacher and other students. Those who feel that learning over the
Internet is better argue that it allows students to learn anytime and anywhere they choose.

Do you feel education is better provided in traditional classrooms or when offered over
the Internet? Write an essay to be read by a classroom teacher in which you persuade the reader
that either traditional classroom education or Internet-based learning is better.

Thesis

Statement

Topic  Despite the fact that we live in an era in which the use of

Sentence 1 technology has overtaken us, in Colombia it is still considered that face-to-

face education is the most appropriate because the culture of virtual self-

learning has not yet been developed.

Topic  Online and traditional courses have great advantages and

Sentence 2 disadvantages, online resources can keep students' attention longer than a

teacher in front of a class but traditional classes have the tutor in front who

could solve any doubt instantly.

Topic  However, face-to-face education is not completely at odds with the

Sentence 3 use of technology and there are hybrid programs of face-to-face education

and the use of technology, which is very positive for countries like

Colombia where education is still in the process of change.

Step 3
Introduction paragraph

A few years ago, distance education was the ugly duckling of teaching, being less

recognized than face-to-face education. Today, online learning has become the preferred option

of millions of people for its flexibility, for eliminating geographical barriers and for providing

access to a more varied educational offer.

Despite the fact that we live in a time when the use of technology has surpassed us, in

countries like Colombia face-to-face education is still considered the most appropriate because

the culture of virtual self-learning has not yet been developed.

Body Paragraphs 1

Online education, also known as e-learning, continues to gain ground from face-to-face

education and the majority of students have tried this type of teaching. 77% of young people in

the world have an online course in their curriculum, the global growth of distance training is the

number of users of online course platforms: the five most used worldwide totaled almost 90

million students in 2018 and more than 900 universities that same year incorporated MOOCs -

massive and open online courses - to their educational offer, as pointed out by the Class Central

seminar search engine.

A great advantage of online courses is that they can hold students' attention longer than a

teacher in front of class would. The human brain has evolved to briefly pay attention to just one

thing. It is therefore no surprise that students cannot sit in class in front of a teacher for long. No

matter how much interest you have in a topic or subject, keeping an eye on a long class or lecture

is impossible for humans.

7

Body Paragraphs 2

On the other hand, the greatest advantage of face-to-face education over online education

is the direct contact that one has at the moment with teachers and colleagues who can clarify

doubts and debate the topics seen in order to enrich and provide feedback on the content. This is

also possible in a virtual way, however, it depends a lot on the type of course being taken, the

availability of the teacher being online all the time and whether or not there is contact with other

students of the same course. taking into account that during the face-to-face classes the deal with

the teaching staff is closer, the students have direct access to the teacher when asking questions

or establishing tutorials with him, the possibility of socializing with more people in a physical

space, contacts are established that They can be of help in the face of the labor market. We could

also speak of discipline as a virtue, having to comply with predetermined schedules instills

discipline to avoid calls of attention from the teaching staff.

Body Paragraphs 3

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VIRTUAL AND PRESENTIAL EDUCATION

Online and face-to-face training are two different ways of acquiring knowledge.

Although both pursue the quality of teaching, each uses its own method and establishes its own

channels and learning guidelines.

Virtual education uses the Internet and information and communication technologies

(ICT) to provide students with teaching tools, chats, blogs, videoconferences or shared

documents that streamline the course and make it more intuitive and easy to follow. This

asynchronous system allows students to attend class, work, communicate, examine themselves
8

and access content from anywhere. Distance training is also characterized by fostering the

autonomy and curiosity of students, collaborative work, critical thinking and self-taught learning.

This system also diversifies the sources of knowledge. On the other hand, in face-to-face

education, students go to a physical classroom where teaching and much of the learning takes

place. In this modality, students acquire a more passive role and adapt to the rhythm and method

of the teacher, who becomes the main source of consultation.

conclusion

However, face-to-face education is not completely at odds with the use of technology and

there are hybrid programs of face-to-face teaching and the use of technology, which is something

very positive for countries like Mexico where education is still undergoing change. Face-to-face

teaching linked to the digital age complements education with tools so that students can continue

their studies at home or anywhere they can connect.

In the end, it is about choosing the method that best suits the personality of each one.

There are students who prefer an in-person tutorial because they need structure and direct human

interaction that they cannot find on the computer. Others see an impossible opportunity to ignore

the ability to combine work and training.

Even so, both formations provide the student with the necessary tools to learn. It is up to

the student himself to decide which are the best for him, the most useful and the ones that best

suit his needs.

Ensuring that face-to-face education is better than online education or vice versa is very

risky, since educational quality depends on many factors. Just as there are success stories in

online education such as "Learning to Learn", there are other virtual courses where teaching
9

leaves much to be desired. The important thing is to take the appropriate tools that both

technology and face-to-face classes provide for educational development, mainly in developing

countries such as Colombia.
