Year End Examination (2020-21)

Std: VI Answer Scheme Subject: English

Section A: Reading
1. Read the passage below and answer the questions.
There were other boys in Manjari village, but Bisnu was the only one who went to
school. The other boys worked in the farms. Bisnu had set his heart on receiving a
good schooling. He walked to school every day.

A colony of langoors lived in the forest. They usually remained on trees but came
down to the ground only to play. They leapt from tree to tree with great agility.

They had grown used to seeing Bisnu walk on the path and did not fear him. They
did not go near the town because the boys threw stones at them. Two paths led
to the town and at the junction of the two paths, Sarru used to wait for him. Sarru
came from a small village which was about three miles from Bisnu’s village and
closer to the town. They often met at this spot, keeping each other company for
the remaining two miles.

“There was a panther in our village last night,” said Sarru.

This information did not excite Bisnu. Panthers were common in the hills and did
not usually pose a problem except during the winter months, when their natural
prey was scarce.
“Wasn’t that the one that left the shikaris wounded?”
“It could be the same. It has a bullet in its leg. These hunters are the people who
cause all the trouble. They think it’s easy to shoot a panther. It would be better if
they missed altogether, but they usually wound it.”
“And then the panther becomes too slow to catch the barking-deer and start
preying on our animals. We are lucky that it didn’t become a man-eater. Do you
remember the man-eater six years ago? I was very young then. My father told me
all about it.”
“What happened to it?”
“I don’t know. Some say it poisoned itself when it ate the headman of the village.”

7. Answer the following questions in 80-100 words.
a. In the story ‘The Loaves’, why was the artist very angry with Miss Martha?
The second man told Miss Martha that the German man’s name was
Blumberger. He was an architectural draftsman. Both of them worked in the
same office. Blumberger was working hard for three months drawing a plan
for a new city hall. It was a prize competition. He had finished inking the lines
the day before. A draftsman always made his drawing in pencil first. When it
was done, he rubbed out the pencil lines with handfuls of stale bread crumbs.
That was better than India rubber. It was for this purpose that Blumberger was
buying the bread. Unfortunately, that day the buttered bread had ruined the
draft and his chances of winning the competition. It was not good for
anything except to be cut up into railroad sandwiches.

head hurt. The next day at school too he had a splitting headache and his eyes
began watering. He was taken to the sick bay in school and questioned by the
nurse. His mother picked him up from school and took him to the

soon united with her husband. She is happy as she is about to start a new life
with her beloved. At the same time, she has tears in her eyes as she is leaving
her parents behind and going to her in-law’s place. The tears in the eyes of the
bride say that the bride is sad about leaving her parent’s house.
d. In the story ‘The Corridor’, what did Mary find in the one place that she went
most often to?
Mary found Ben Weatherstaff's robin redbreast, perched on top of the wall. It
was tilting forward to look at her with his small head on one side. She spoke
to him as if she was sure that he would understand and answer. It did not
seem at all queer to her. The robin twittered and chirped and hopped along
the wall as if answering her.
It seemed to Miss Mary as if she understood him, too, though he was not
speaking in words. Mary began to laugh, and as he hopped and took little
flights along the wall, she ran after him. She cried out to the robin that she
liked him. She chirped and tried to whistle. The robin seemed to be quite
satisfied and chirped and whistled back at her. At last, he spread his wings and
made a darting flight to the top of a tree, where he perched and sang loudly.
e. In the story ‘An Invitation’, what according to the writer is a curious fact which

None of us have any expectation that things are going to happen till the very
moment when they do happen. We wake up some morning with no idea that
happiness is at hand and the world has changed for us; or we wake bright and

cheerful, with never a guess that clouds of sorrow are lowering in our sky, to
put all the sunshine out for a while and before noon, all is dark. Nothing
whispers of either the joy or the grief. No instinct bids us to delay or to hasten
the opening of the letter or telegram, or the lifting of the latch of the door at
which stands the messenger of good or ill.
