compare your definition with what you have just read about multi-grade. how was your definition
similar or different?

》Multi -Grade including or involving students from more than one grade level a Multi-grade
classroom. Multi-grade teaching is a situation in which one teacher has to teach many grades, all at
the same time. It happens in all schools where there are more grades than teachers. Some Multi-
grade teachers may teach two grades, but some teach Module 1, Unit 1: What Is Multi-grade
Teaching? 11 Page 17 three or four grades. Multi – Grade is different like for normal class Multi-
grade teaching means to teach students of different grades, ages and abilities in the same group. It
is different from mono- grade teaching in which students within the same grades are seemed to be
more similar in term of age and ability. Multi-grade schools are those which have classes that
combine students of different ages and different abilities in one classroom. A Multi-grade class
involves students of different ages and developmental levels, with different skills and learning
abilities learning together with one teacher.

》In the multi-grade classroom, more time must be spent in organizing and planning for
instruction. Extra materials and strategies must be developed so that students will be meaningfully

Studies suggest they can be effective and cost-effective means of raising student outcomes and expanding educational access in
poor countries and regions. ... Implementing a program of multigrade schools represents a substantial alteration of core
educational practices in rural areas of developing countries .

By adopting a Multigrade approach, access to education can be increased and teacher deployment can be more effective.
Teaching in the Multigrade classroom requires a sound knowledge of curriculum, strategies for providing student centred
and group learning, and a different approach to assessment and evaluation.

》 I have given three points becauseTeachers also might have a hard time collaborating with each
other because many of them are on different tracks (Towler). Students on different tracks might be
learning completely different, or maybe even opposite lessons due to lack of collaboration between
their teachers (Towler).
