ONLINE COURSE N° 07

Dear students. Hello I hope our online course will meet you all in good health . Thank you for all your
exposes which I corrected on Saturday May 1 and which stand for our sixth (6th) online course . I
have tried to give each group the comments and some corrections. I hope the groups will find time to
discuss about them and take those remarks into account in order not to repeat them in future . And
for any next presentations you will do much much better.

Now Let’s correct the exercises about meetings.

As you may all know holding a meeting ,of any kind, needs a little bit of preparation.
What are the preparations neded for the success of the meeting.
T : What are the tasks needed ?
S :…….

Say your opinion (These are personal questions)

1. What meeting do people have in general ?
2. How often do you attend a meeting ?
3. Do you take an active part in meetings ?
4. Do you think meetings are useful ? Why (not)?

Here is a list of words in A and B match them

then arrrange what is before, during and after the meeting

A B
To set up The agenda (before)
To send Notification (before the meeting)
Email Participants (before)
Check Attendance (during the meeting)
Collect Minutes (before)
To set The agenda (ordre du jour) (before and during)

Ask Availability (of participants, of room) (before)

Organise Floortaking (during)

See to Refreshments (before, after)
Appoint Chairman and spokesman (before)
Report Last information (during)
Share Minutes (before)
Proceed to A vote (during)
Adjourn A meeting, to stop a m. for a short time ( during)

Deadlock for eg : three for and three against a motion or an

idea (during)
A proxy a proxy vote is made on behalf of someone else
(if permission has been obtained) (during)
casting vote the chairperson may vote to ensure that a
decision is made in case of deadlock.(during)

Power of attorney. Permission to act on someone else’s behalf.

(during)

A general agreement on a subject A consensus (to reach) (during)

Convene Call for

A list of points or items for minutes
discussion

Complete this paragraph using words and phrases from above.

Before the Chairperson convenes a meeting he/she should circulate an agenda so that
everyone knows what items are to be discussed. At the beginning or the meeting the
minutes of the previous meeting are confirmed. Then those present discuss each item
on the agenda end try to reach a consensus view. If an issue is important a vote may be
taken ; those absent may have given power of attorney to someone present and can
therefore vote by proxy . In the event of a deadlock the Chairperson may record a
casting vote so that a decision is made.

Then your meeting is a complete sucess or failure. Depending on how you organised it.
Now let’s do some Use of English review.

Expense vs Expenses vs Expenditure

1. Expense is the money that it costs you to do something. The word occurs in these fixed
expressions.
We’ve modernised our offices at vast expense.
We went to great expense to improve our social club.
The new machine cost a lot to install, but it was worth the expense because of the time it has saved ;

2. The plural of expense is expenses : the amount of money spent can be listed.
such as electricity, water, and local taxes come under the heading of overheads
In some cases expenses will be repaid.
Your interview will be held at 3 p.m. in the Royal Hotel. All reasonable travel and accommodation
expenses will be reimbursed.
We will pay the technician’s return air fare plus expenses

3. If you do something at someone else’s expense then you do not pay :

I fly first Class at the expense of something or someone else, it is not to their advantage.
Economic progress in the Third world should not be at the expense of rural employment.
A devaluation improves the position of exporters at the expense of importers.
4. Expenditure is a more formal word and is used in the context of the spending of (usually)
large sums of money for a particular purpose.
Expenditure on public services has been cut by the government.
Expenditure on TV advertising is huge.

Complete the blanks using expense, expenses or expenditure

worth the expense.

increase in production.

6. The different expenses (rent, heating, cleaning bills, etc.) that a firm must pay for out of
trading profit are called overheads.
7. Most agents want 10% commission plus expenses for entertainment, advertising and so
on.
8. British Telecom’s expenditure on telephone exchange modernisation was over £ 500
million.

Now let’s come to the next part of our lessons about

Writing your Curriculum Vitae (CV)

The curriculum vitae or CV is an account of an individual’s educational background and

previous work experience. Prospective empoyers can judge whether the skills,
accomplishment and abilities described match their needs and organisational goals.
1.1 The CV should be clear to read and present an attractive image. It is important to
highlight the features which will interest the reader. It should not be too long. Space left
blank on the page makes it easy to read quickly
1.2 There are two main formats : the chronological and the functional. In both types there
will be the same basic information (name, addresses, date of birth and civil status.)
1.3 When applying for a post abroad it is helpful to give the names of equivalent
qualifications which can be easily understood by the reader.

2. A chronological CV (see below)

This is the most familiar layout. It is possible to start from the present and work back in time
(usual in the U.S) or begin at the start of one’s carreer and work forward in time.

3 . a functional CV (see below as resume)

Here the content is organised into specific categories of abilities. It is useful if you have a
short work record or previous jobs unrelated to current goals. It tells a potential employer
what you can do.
