NOTES:
1. T he maximum support spacings have been based on the following pressure coefficients (for fully enclosed buildings):
Roofs: Cpe = -0.90 Cpi = +0.20 K1 = 1.5
Walls: Cpe = -0.65 Cpi = +0.20 K1 = 1.5
2. The roof span details are based on non trafficable roof conditions in accordance with AS 1170.1 - 1989, and are only
suitable for occasional maintenance loading.
3. The wind classifications (W28, W33, etc) are in accordance with AS 4055 - 1992, Wind Loads for Housing.
4. All configurations are based on battens being fixed to steel (1.0mm BMT minimum) or timber supports, as per the
following fixing details:
Steel (up to 2.0mm BMT) No. 12 - 14 x 20mm
Timber (hardwood and softwood) No. 14 - 10 x 50mm
Fasteners at end of laps No. 12 -14 x 20mm
Fasteners Legend for the Quick Selection Tables:
2 fasteners per support
4 fasteners per support
5. Laps shall be a minimum of 15% of the span (measured between fasteners) and fixed with 4 No. 12 - 14 x 20 Hex head
self-drilling screws.
6. The minimum end bearing shall be 50mm.
7. These charts may also be used for carport and verandah applications.

Strong and rigid, topspan 120 sections were originally developed to
.0
meet rural market needs, however their versatility now means they may
be used in many applications as alternatives to light gauge purlins and
girts (steel or timber).
For flooring applications, please contact your local BlueScope Lysaght
office for advice.
The performance of topspan 120 is maintained even when lapped
because the profile permits a precise, snug lap without the need to
deform the section’s shape.
It can be used in many construction projects such as sheds, carports and
garages, or for racking, fencing or handyman applications.
Roll-formed from quality Australian steel, topspan 120 is zincalume
steel coated for corrosion-free long life.
It won’t burn, warp, twist, splinter or rot and it won’t be attacked by
termites. topspan 120 is versatile, economical, easily handled and
stored simply by stacking.
Ease of Use
Due to its innovative design, topspan 120 is much easier to work with
than C purlins. Its novel shape means it can be mounted directly onto
rafters or against columns without the use of cleats or bolts.
It’s shape also allows topspan 120 to be stacked for convenient storage
and transportation.
Material specifications
topspan 120 light steel sections are made from zincalume
aluminium/zinc alloy coated steel complying with AS1397 G550, AZ150
(550 MPa minimum yield stress, 150 g/m2 minimum coating mass).
Thicknesses (BMT) (mm) 0.70, 0.90
Yield Strength (MPa) 550
Coating Mass (g/m2) 150
Mass (kg/m) 0.70 BMT 2.06
0.90 BMT 2.64
Safe load tables
The tables give a practical and economical solution for most domestic
buildings in non-cyclonic areas.
Refer to tables page 6.
Screw selection
For fixing of TOPSPAN 120 to supports and at lapped ends use hex head
self drilling and self tapping screws according to the following:
Steel supports for flanges up to 2.0mm thickness in open profiles
No.14 - 10 x 20mm self drilling self tapping Class 3 screws
Steel supports (over 2.0mm thick)
No.14-20 x 22mm self drilling self tapping Class 3 screws. Pre-drilling is
recommended.
Timber Supports: Hardwood
No.14-10 x 50mm (Type 17), Pre-drilling is recommended.
NOTES:
1. The maximum support spacings have been on the following pressure coefficients (for fully enclosed buildings):
Roofs: Cpe = -0.9 Cpi = 0.2 Kl = 1.5
Walls: Cpe = - 0.65 Cpi = 0.2 Kl = 1.5
2. The roof span details are based on non trafficable roof conditions in accordance with AS 1170.1—1989, and is only suitable
for occasional maintenance loading.
3. The wind classifications (W33, W41, etc) are in accordance with AS 4055—1992, Wind Loads for Housing.
4. All configurations are based on battens being fixed to steel (1.9mm BMT G450 minimum) or timber supports, as per the following
fixing details:
