TOPIC : GAGNE’S NINE EVENTS OF INSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION :

This essay will illustrate the behavioral or cognitive approach ,list the event and

justify it,create one classroom practice and reflect the principles.

BODY :

In this 21st century , different things are best learned using various methods.Gagne’s

Nine Events of instruction are a perfect example of how to implement this

concept.Teachers can connect with students in a way that is suitable to their learning

styles in any given circumstance .Through this way ,students achieve more optimal

learning outcomes and become true subject matter experts.

APPLICATION :

Below is a simple review of Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction along with practical

examples that I use to complete each within my lessons :

1. Gain attention :

*Get the students primed and focused ,so they are ready to learn the topic at hand .To

capture learner’s attention ,I usually pose thought-provoking questions to students.

*I tell students a story to gain their attention and ready to learn and participate in the

upcoming activities. Then create a sort of surprise and pose a thought-provoking

question. This event aligns with the behaviorist approach because according to the

Law of Readiness by Thorndike (1913),when students are ready to learn then

behaviors that foster learning will be rewarding for them.

2. Inform students of the objectives :

I tell students what they will learn during the lesson to get them in the proper state of

mind and so they can anticipate what they will need to do afterward.

*I include complete details about assignments, readings ,activities, etcThis aligns with

the cognitive approach.

3. Stimulate recall of prior learning :

Prime students for learning new material by refreshing their memories of prior learned

content.

*I conduct summaries of past lessons

*I connect the material from the past to the current lesson and bridge the gap.

*I utilize discussion forums ….

4. Present the content :

I make sure that the environment is ready and students are receptive, it is time for me

to teach the applicable lesson.

*I ensure you did your homework and devise a carefully planned out lesson

*I keep things flexible enough to allow for discussions to flow

*I allow for hands -on practice when feasible

*I incorporate a variety of content delivery methods to keep students engaged , such

as readings, group projects, individual works and creative ideas ,variety of contents.

5. Provide learning guidance:

I explain clearly to my students what is expected for them to understand and any

instructions needed to achieve successful outcomes.

* I make relevant facts and guidance clear to them

*I use graghs, timelines, stories, rubrics,role-playing, mnemonics and anything that

helps students comprehend and store pertinent information in their mind.

6. Elicit performance (practice ):

I instruct students to practice or demonstrate their new found knowledge so it can be

assessed very well.

*I am always sure all steps above have been completed that students are aware they

will be assessed and given feedback.

*I have students practice in small group of six

*I offer practice opportunities ,hands-on activities for individual

7. Provide feedback :

I offer immediate feedback on students tasks that is personalized, constructive and

positive(I mark and correct them)

*I remember the different types of feedback and use the correct type for every

circumstance.

*I evaluate -appraising student work quality

* I do remedial--guiding students to find the correct answer without telling it to them

*I do the descriptive or analytic feedback

*Peer does the evaluation and self-evaluation

*I use formative feedback for brief assignments ,and summative for fuller assessments

*I incorporate technology tools (software ).

8. Assess performance :

I conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine how well students met their

learning objectives so learning gaps can be cleared

*I use a mix of assessment tools

*I am transparent, objective, and fair in all assessments no bias .

*I grade work against pre-established criteria and evaluation rubrics

9. Enhance retention and transfer :

I do everything possible to help my students retain the information they worked so

hard to learn and give them chances to personalize their learned experience to apply it

to their own life or future endearvour.

*I assemble students into discussion groups and provide the material for them to talk

about. The events 4--7 align with the behaviorist approach.

REFLECTION:

Robert Gagne ‘s Nine Events of Instruction envisage teaching and learning

strategy. For instance : structured instruction. It does not necessarily require systematic

order and interpretation. It is good for classroom learning,e-learning.But ,it lacks of

communicative skills and imagination, it does not apply in simple exposition, guided

discovery exploration or collaboration. So often, good ideas are let down by poor

implementation

CONCLUSION :

En resume,Gagne’s Nine Events of instruction in high-organized ,action-oriented

methodlogy that empowers educators with a solid framework they can use to increase

teaching effectively either virtually or physically environment setting up..The

emphasis is firmly placed on the learner and teachers doing everything possible to

ensure students grasp ,retain, and use the information taught to them .In this vein it is

every teacher’s dream come true.
