Rational Exponents
DEFINITION:
1
𝑛 𝑛
For any larger 𝑛 > 1 and any real number 𝑏 for which √𝑏 is defined, 𝑏 𝑛 = √𝑏.
1
In the definition of 𝑏 𝑛 , if 𝑛 is even, 𝑏 must be nonnegative.
EXAMPLES:
Simplify the given expressions.
a. b. c. d.
SOLUTION:
a. Write the exponential term as a c. Write the exponential term as a
=3 radical. Evaluate the root. =5 radical. Evaluate the root.
Note:
Higher order roots can be calculated using the key . If your calculator does not have such key, calculate
a higher order root by writing the radical as an expression with a rational exponent.
EXAMPLES:
Use calculator to evaluate each radical. Round your answer to the nearest hundredths.
3 5
a. √12 b. √30
PROCEDURE:
Writing the Equivalent Exponential Expression of a Radical
1. Write the radicand as the base of the exponential expression.
2. The reciprocal of the index becomes the exponent.
SOLUTION:
Write each radical as an exponential expression and then use a calculator to evaluate it.
=( )m or
2|P age
NOTE:
𝑚
When 𝑏 𝑛 is written as a radical, n is in the index of the radical and m is the power to which the radical is
raised.
EXAMPLES:
Evaluate each expression.
2 3 3
a. 273 b. 164 c. −252
SOLUTION:
a. Rewrite. b. Rewrite.
=(3)2 Evaluate the radical. =(2)3 Evaluate the radical.
=9 Evaluate the exponential form. =8 Evaluate the exponential form.
Note: Using 𝑐 we get the equation . Evaluating 163 is tedious without a calculator, so we use
𝑚
𝑛
the other form of the rule, 𝑏 = √𝑏 𝑚. 𝑛
c. = -( )3 Rewrite.
= -(5)3 Evaluate the radical.
=-125 Evaluate the exponential form
3
Note: Using −252 , the negative sign is not a part of the base. It tells us to find the opposite of the value
of the exponent term.
3 3
We can also think of −252 as -1∙ 252 .
EXAMPLES:
Simplify each exponential expression to the nearest hundredths.
3 2
a. 82 b. 163
SOLUTION:
2
a. b. 163≈6.35
The definition involving negative integer exponents can be extended to include negative rational exponents.
DEFINITION:
𝑚
1
If m and n are positive integers with no common factor other than 1, and 𝑏 ≠ 0, then 𝑏 𝑛 = 𝑚 for
𝑏𝑛
1
which 𝑏 𝑛 is defined.
EXAMPLES:
Evaluate each expression.
