Pirate Chip
5.0 MARKETING PLAN
22
Pirate Chip
The demand for savoury snacks, including the banana chips in Malaysia is increasing. Many
surveys indicate that the banana chip industry will continue to grow in the future. The common
banana chips produced in the world are the banana figs, savoury banana chips and sweet banana
chips. The most common banana chip produced in Malaysia is savoury banana chip. The global
volume sale of chips, the retail sale of savoury snacks in Malaysia and the value keeps increasing
from year to year. In 2000s, the production value of banana chips in Malaysia was estimated to be
RM9.3 million per year, and it has increased since then.
In the chip’s snacks market, there are lots of competitors with well-known brands. Their
brands have appeared in the market for a long time and are well-known to the customers. For
example, Popchips, Sunchips, Chipster, and Pringles. Therefore, we need to expand our brand to
compete with them. Thus, we provide a special and new healthy snack for the customers. Our
company sells banana chips, which is a very healthy snack that will be long-term developed in the
market. There are certain aspects that may affect or influence our product in the future such as
changes in demographic, customer needs and economy.
a. Demographic
The population of Malaysia is around 32.7 million and is increasing around ten thousand people
every year. In the next ten year, the total human population of Malaysia is approximately around 36
million. The demand for healthy snacks like banana chips will keep increasing. Therefore, there
may be many competitors who will sell the same healthy snacks like us in the future. It may affect
our product distribution and targeted customers in the market. Hence, we have to work hard and be
more creative to offer the best products and service.
b. Customer Needs
As the population of Malaysia keep increasing every year, the customers’ needs for healthy snacks
will also increase in the future. The consumption of fruit-based snacks is expected to increase
because there is a growing consumer concern towards ethnic food and healthy food. The lower fat
and non- fat chips are becoming popular. Presently, consumers are looking for products with low
fat and non- fat, rich in vitamins or made from organic ingredients with less or without
preservatives. Banana chips are more nutritious compared to other chips, which mostly contain
mono sodium-glutamate. Banana contains healthy sugar, carbohydrate, protein, fat and vitamins
23
Pirate Chip
such as vitamin A, B1, Niacin,
24
Pirate Chip
B2, B6 and also vitamin C. Therefore, our product distribution needs to increase in order to fulfil
the customers’ needs because healthy snacks are widely consumed by the people from different age
groups.
c. Economy
Malaysia’s economy has reflected the purchasing power of the people in the market. It can be seen
that Covid-19 pandemic has affected the economy and spending pattern of the consumers. The
pandemic had already caused massive dislocation among various businesses. It also led a lot of
people and families to poverty. Undeniably, online shopping and e-commerce are very popular and
have been growing constantly which is good for our business. But perhaps, snacks may not be a
priority for consumers to purchase compared to other important life’s necessities. This situation
will influence the marketing strategies that we have been planned to increase the sales of products.
Our marketing strategy is based on becoming the potential choice for customers in the market, so
our company focuses on satisfying our customers’ needs and attaining the overall growth of our
company. By developing marketing strategies that focus on growth and customers’ needs, our main
objective is to increase sales by 50% yearly and capture greater market share in the market and
enter new markets internationally within five years. At the same time, the growth enables our
company to enhance customer relationships and help our company achieve greater profits.
Therefore, our marketing strategies will seek to first raise customer awareness regarding the
products and establish connections with targeted markets and work toward building customer
loyalty and referrals.

at RM15.50, but we offer the official price for the product at RM15 after rounding. For two jars of
banana chips, the total price is RM27, while family packs (5 jars) of our product will be RM69.50.

that the food product is assured in terms of religious compliance, safety and hygiene. Our company,
Pirate Chip aims to get Halal certification from Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) as it
will ensure that our products are safe to be consumed by Muslim customers. The certificate of halal
gives assurance to the consumers that our banana chips are produced according to the Shariah law,
and that they are also clean, hygienic, environmentally friendly, and respects animal welfare.
Having a halal certificate would be an advantage to our company because it can be a tool to attract
our customers to buy our banana chips especially Muslims and it is a great marketing strategy to
gain trust from them. Gaining customer’s trust is a huge win for our company as they will be more
confident to purchase our product. Therefore, our business strives to attain halal certification in
order to cater all prospective customers.
Other than the halal certification by JAKIM, Pirate Chip will also try to obtain the MeSTI
(Makanan Selamat Tanggungjawab Industri) certificate. Under the 2009 Food Hygiene Regulation,
every food processing, producing, and packaging facility owner and occupant is expected to plan
and maintain a Food Security Assurance Program. This certification is also mandatory for an entity
that has no other Food Safety Management System in place, as MeSTI meets the basic criteria to
ensure that food provided by the manufacturer is safe inside Malaysia. The objective of MeSTI is to
put in place a system for the maintenance of food hygiene and process control which includes food
safety assurance and food traceability. Thus, it is important for our company to get this certification
to ensure that our products are safe to eat. With this certification, we will gain more trust from our
customers when they see MeSTI logo on our product. Not only that, we will also be receiving
additional promotional activity because of the reliability of this certification.
Our product also will have the ‘Buatan Malaysia’ logo to prove that our product is
manufactured in Malaysia and contains local contents. The Ministry of Domestic Trade and
Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) is responsible for processing application and issuing ‘Made in
Malaysia’ logo marking to private or partnership businesses, private limited companies and

cooperatives upon compliance with the requirements. From ingredients to packaging, we ensure
that the things that we use are made in Malaysia. As a Malaysian, we should use Malaysians’
products to show our support to our own country and promote it internationally.

7.5 Start-up Costs
For the beginning of our banana chip business, our first investor is from contributions of our
own personal savings. This will allow us to keep focused on our efforts without the financial
pressures of external lenders, such as obtaining a loan from a bank. The cost of resale
supplies and delivery service expenditures are not included in our start-up costs because they
will be paid by our consumers at the time of purchase. So these are the following total
starting costs for our business:
3. Business Registration 60
5. Overhead 800
The amount of capital needed in carrying out the business is RM25, 824.20. Each member
will contribute RM2, 000 in the company which will give a total of RM20, 000 in company’s
capital. Our company needs to take out a loan because our contribution of RM20, 000 is not
enough to cover our start-up cost of RM RM25, 824.20.

7.9 Break Even Analysis
1. Fixed Cost = Rental + Overhead + Salary
= RM2, 000 + RM800 + RM20, 000
= RM22, 800
2. Variable Cost Per Unit = Raw material cost per unit + packaging cost per unit
= RM0.33 + RM0.80 + RM0.15
= RM 1.30
3. Selling Price per Unit = RM 15
4. Break Even Point = Fixed Cost (Selling Price – Variable Cost per Unit)
= RM 22, 800 / (RM 15 – RM 1.30)
= 1664 units of Banana Chips per month
UNIT
● The total fixed cost is RM22, 800 per month including the salary, overhead and
rental expenses.
● The break-even point of Banana chips is at the 1664 unit with total sales revenue of
RM24, 960.00.
● Thus, we need to sell 1664 units of popsicles per month or 56 units per day to
achieve the break-even point.
