“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way that we perceive the

world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others” — Anthony Robbins

According to Anthony Robbins, to effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in
the way that we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with
others. People that go other country have obstacles to effective communication

Identifying Barriers to Effective Intercultural

Communication
The United States remains a top study destination for international students, with over
764,000 enrolled during the 2011/12 academic year (“Open Doors Fast Facts,” 2012).
A growing international student population enhances university campuses by contributing to
a diversified community and providing exposure to new cultural perspectives (Bevis, 2002).
One such barrier is ethnocentrism. Any intercultural interaction will be influenced by an
individual’s ethnocentrism, or the belief that one’s culture (“in-group”) is superior to
another’s culture (“out-group”).
Intercultural communication apprehension, “the fear or anxiety associated with either
real or anticipated communication with people from different groups, especially cultural
and/or ethnic groups”
Intercultural communication anxiety is partially due to communication obstacles such as a
student’s language ability, differences in expression of emotion, and differences in verbal
and non-verbal communication styles (Spencer-Rodgers and McGovern, 2002).

Six Barriers to Intercultural Communication

Negative Stereotypes and Prejudices, Feelings and Emotions.

Obstacles and Opportunities in Intercultural

Communication
First, anxiety. Second, stereotypes and generalizations.
Tendencies of human perception: Selective attention, Selective organization and
labeling, and Selective interpretation.
Ethnocentrism and stereotypes: The idea that our ingroup members' views and
standards are more important than those of any outgroup. Ethnocentrism has been
broken down into three states. These are denial of cultural difference, defense against
cultural difference, and minimization of cultural difference.
Stereotypes are overgeneralizations about a group's members based on our inflexible
beliefs about the behaviors or characteristics of that group (positive and negative),
(racism).
We develop these stereotypes based on past observations, media images, or what
others have said.
Prejudice: Is the feelings and attitudes toward outgroup members, be they positive or
negative.
Prejudice, a biased mindset, leads to discrimination, a verbal and nonverbal attitude and
behavior.
Racism is the direct effect of and practice of discrimination. Racism can be spoken or
unspoken.
