__Causes of Miseries, the essay started by analyzing the various causes of the
desolations suffered by the Filipino people.Spain's military law application as a
result of such practices, the Philippine population has declined dramatically.
Poverty grew, and farmlands were allowed to wither. The family as a social unit
was disregarded, and in general, every facet of Filipino life was slowed. Indigenous
Filipino culture is deteriorating and disappearing. When Spain arrived with the
sword and the cross, the original Philippine culture was gradually destroyed. As a
result, Filipinos began to lose faith in their past and ancestry, were skeptical of
their current way of life, and finally lost hope in the future and the preservation of
their race. The indigenous peoples began to lose who they were, including their
important beliefs, religion, music, poetry, and other sorts of customs and traditions.
Passivity and subservience to Spanish conquerors. The Spanish friars were one
of the most influential elements that promoted a culture of quiet among the locals.
Because of the use of force and intimidation in the name of God, the Filipinos
learned to bow to the will of the foreigners. The issue then becomes, what has
awakened the Filipino people's hearts and opened their minds to their plight?
Eventually, the locals understood that such persecution by foreign conquerors in
their community could no longer be accepted. In this essay, Rizal raises the topic
of whether Spain can truly stifle the Philippines' growth and development. Despite
the conquerors' atrocities, corruption, and degeneration, Rizal remained confident
that the homeland would finally develop. He provided the following reasons in
support of this, Keeping the masses dumb and illiterate had failed. National
awareness had not yet been awakened, and great Filipino brains were still
emerging from the ruins. Keeping the people destitute was also futile. On the
contrary, experiencing a life of perpetual poverty enabled Filipinos to act on their
desire for a change in their way of life. They began to look for new vistas through
which they could grow. Exterminating the population as a means of preventing
development also failed. The Filipino race was able to withstand wars and famines,
and grew even more numerous as a result. To completely destroy the nation would
necessitate the sacrifice of thousands of Spanish soldiers, something Spain would
not allow. As a result, Rizal determined that Spain lacked the ability to halt the
country's growth. What has to be done is for her colonial policies to be adapted to
Philippine society and the people's growing nationalism.
