I. Introductory Concept
Different samples can be taken from the same population. This results to having
different statistics – mean, variance, standard deviation, etc. – each time a sample is
obtained. The differences in the statistics pose a problem when we want to make
generalizations about the population. This learning activity sheet (LAS) will familiarize
you with the tools to settle these differences.
III. Activities
Read the following situations and determine whether the population variance is
known or unknown. To the right of each scenario, draw a smiling face ( ) when the
population variance is known, otherwise, draw a sad face ( ). Draw the faces on
the answer column to the right of each item.
Situations or ?
1. The ages of the 8 male teachers of the school are 28, 40, 53, 42,
23, 26, 48, and 44.
2. The standard deviation of the test scores from a 30-item test in
math is given by 𝜎 = 3.5. This was taken from a sample of 𝑛 = 24
students.
3. The mean class size of grade 11 classes at a certain school is 𝜇 =
31. This year’s sample of class sizes in grade 11 are 28, 34, 30, 27.
4. Given 𝜇 = 6, 𝑠 = 1.12, and 𝑛 = 11
5. A jeepney operator owns 5 jeepneys. Each jeepney’s average
daily income is P425, P390, P405, P370, and P390.

Based on activity 1, the situations presented to you could either have the population
variance to be known, or unknown. When the population variance is known, it is easy
to find the standard error 𝜎𝑋 by dividing the population standard deviation 𝜎 by the
𝜎
square root of the sample 𝑛, that is, 𝜎𝑋 = 𝑛. However, if 𝜎 2 is unknown, the best
√
estimate to the standard error is the sample standard deviation 𝑠 divided by √𝑛, that
𝑠
is, 𝑠𝑋 = .
√𝑛

2. A sample of final grades is taken
from a class with a mean grade
of 86. The sample grades are 88,
89, 92, 81, 76, 90.
3. Samples of size 3 will be drawn
with replacement from a
population consisting of 10, 8,
13, 9, 11.
4. The mean height of SHS students
is 170 cm. A researcher wants to
verify if that is true by getting a
sample of 20 students and
recording their heights. The
researcher got a mean of 182
cm and a standard deviation of
4.5 cm.
5. A researcher wants to know if a
ream of bond paper has 500
leaves. He gets a sample of 10
reams of bond papers and
obtains a mean of 498 with a
standard deviation of 0.6.
