The graphs depict the renewal from a residential area to a complex square in
Lakeside between 2000 and 2009.

The initial impression of the map was the complete transformation from
an old housing locality into a metropolitan state, with the addition of
advanced facilities and public sectors.

In 2000, the whole area was thoroughly encircled by accommodation amenities,
covered with few entertainment and schooling conveniences, even, with a primitive
vicinity and desolate warehouse nearby the lake.

However, over a nine-year period, the Lakeside witnessed a horde of dramatic
changes. Remarkably, the industrial complex was erected, replacing the residential
and industry area in the south, catering for manufacturing demand. To the
northwest, more public amenities were set up, with the existence of a
cinema, an office and a university hall which reinstated art centre and an
old borough. The lake in the south was reformed to a pond, further flowing beside
an unchanged school a shopping centre which used to be a residential complex. The
upper part of the pond, desolate warehouse,  was utilized to a parking.

2000 and 2009. V For the sake of residents demand increase bounds and leaps the
government took the plunge to conduct exponential alterations to this place with
the aim of catering for numerous amenities and a better experience.
After the extension, the residential area was knocked-down and
converted to industrial complex in the south-east, roughly doubling the
size of manufacturer zones to allow for the addition of extra workers. The
lake was narrowed into a pond so that the government could utilize the rest land for
different purposes. Next comes, to the west, the shopping center newly
reconstructed where it was originally a residential area, potentially
attracting more tourists and providing an abundance of convenient
facilities. The old town was renovated as offices and university located on the left
of the pond, meeting works and studies need of the residents. Ultimately, to the
north, the car park replaced the derelic warehouse opening up the lots area.
Albeit there are spectacular changes, the government remained a few of
old designs such as the residential area located to the north-west and
school for kindergarten.

The given maps give information regarding the alterations that occurred at the area
of Lakeside during the period from 2000 to 2009.

Generally, the initial impression is that the area was more industrial with
improved amenities after the major maintenance.

In 2000, the Lakeside area was built with a majority of residential houses and
traditional facilities in the background. However, it was completely renovated
during the next nine years. In the southeast, there used to be an industrial
complex and residential zone; however, in 2009, they were replaced with a widened
and modern complex, with more factories. Moreover, there are some remarkable
transformations in the northwest; a derelict warehouse in the farthest north was
demolished and developed into a car park. Also, next to it, a old town was
converted into offices and university mainly for better working and
studying environment and the west of the map sprung up a cinema for
entertainment and a modern shopping center.

It is worth noting that a residential area and a school remained

unchanged, but a lake in the west of the map was narrowed down to a pond for
fishing and other activities.

The maps demonstrate the development of the lakeside area from 2000 to 2009.
Overall, the area witnessed dramatic changes, the most prominent of which is
the expansion of the industrial complex in the southeast, as well as the
removal of two residential areas. However, the residential area in the
northwest and the woodland on the other side of the river stayed unchanged over
the time period.
In 2000, the lake water had passed through school and industrial complex but
after 9 years lake changed into pond may be due to the increment of population.
Derelic warehouse which was beside the residential area was replaced by the car
park for the Offices and University purpose in 2009 which was an old town in
2000. Similarly, in 2009, Art Centre had changed into Cinema for entertainment.
Likewise, a residential area situated in front of Art Centre replaced by a shopping
centre in the northwest.
In terms of the Industrial Complex, the land was expanded replacing residential
areas on the side of the southeast. The interesting fact is that three residential
areas in 2000 were decreased to one in 2009 and the school area remained
unchanged till 2009 in lakeside.

The maps show the development in terms of urbanization in the lakeside area from
2000 to 2009. Overall, the place has been fully modernized with several
new facilities built for domestic and industrial activities including
factories, supermarkets, offices, etc.
As can be seen from the first map, in the north was mainly a living area with quite
old-fashioned facilities such as an abandoned warehouse and an old town next to
the lake. There used to be two residential areas on either side of the art
center and a school next to the river. In the south is a small industrial area by
the lake next to the residential area at the bottom of the map. After the
renovation, the area was filled with a large number of modern facilities to
replace the old one. The lake has been reduced to a pond to make room for
construction, while the warehouse and the old town were changed into a parking
lot, an office and a university. The art center and adjacent residential area
developed into a cinema and shopping center to serve the needs of the residents.
The residential area in the south was demolished to expand the industrial
zone along with many new factories contributing to the industrialization
process.

Map (lakeside)
The two maps depict how the Lakeside was transformed over the course of nine
years, from 2000 to 2009. The initial impression the map is that the region
showed the complete urbanization within addition of more recreational and
academic amenities. Besides, the majority of previous accommodations were
obliterated to make room for this urbanized trend.
In 2000, there was a lake on the right corner, which separated the Lakeside into
two distinct parts, one was in northwest and the other was in southeast. It used to
be three several houses for residents, one entertaining place and some basic
facilities.
However, over such years, whilst the left upper housing units and school
sited in the main area were untouched, this place witnessed a number of
dramatic changes. The derelict warehouse and the old town next to the available
residential area were knocked down and replaced with one new parking for cars and
offices, an university consecutively. At the bottom of the accommodation, a new
cinema and shopping complex were substituted for the traditional art centre and
houses in turn on the ground of performing better entertaining activities. The
inherent lake was contracted to a pond and to the right of it an extended
industrial complex was erected with the aim of enhancing the productivity.

The maps elucidate the differences in the lakeside between 2009 and 2014. In
general, this place experienced a bunch of dramatic changes in infrastructure to
improve the industrial.
In the past, this place was almost taken up by the residential areas. However,
after the rebuilding, the most noticeable is that the industrial complex, as
well as the convenient places, was set up across this area. Remarkably, the
lake at the end of the river was worn down to a small pond. Below it, the residential
area in the right corner was merged with the industrial complex to become the
more enormous one, which contains a host of factories to support the development
of the economy. On the north side, the derelict warehouse was replaced by the car
park to serve the travel needs of citizens. Meanwhile, the old town next to the lake
was reconstructed to the offices and university to increase not only the job but also
the knowledge opportunity of the youngsters. Besides, the art center between the
residential areas was updated to the cinema suitable for modern art. The shopping
centre also took over the later residential area to raise the consumption demand of
the residents. Surprisingly, the school next to the cinema remained unchanged.

How to Describe Specific Changes

The ability to describe change is crucial to answering these questions. The various
buildings and features will normally be labelled for you. What you need to work on
is how to write about how they have changed from the past up until the present
day.
Buildings– demolished, knocked-down, flattened, replaced, renovated,
built, constructed, reconstructed, developed, extended, expanded,
relocated, converted and modernized.
Examples:
The government demolished the industrial estate and developed a sports
ground.
They removed the shops and replaced it with a skyscraper.
A port was constructed at the edge of the river.
The factory in the city centre was demolished and relocated to the north of the
city.

The trees were cleared to make way for houses.
Roads, bridges and railways lines- constructed, built, extended, expanded
and removed.
The main road was extended and a new bridge built over the river.
Leisure facilities- opened, set up, developed.
Examples:
A skate park was set up next to the swimming pool.
A park was developed beside the forest.
How to Describe General Changes
As this is an IELTS writing task 1 question we must write an overview and this is
where we talk generally about the main changes that have occurred between
the two maps.
Below are some examples of general statements we could use to describe change
in towns and cities.
9. Over the period, the area witnessed dramatic changes.
10. From 1995 to 2005, the city centre saw spectacular developments.
11. The village changed considerably over the time period.
12. During the 10 year period, the industrial area was totally transformed.
13. Over the past 20 years, the residential area was totally reconstructed.
14. Over the time period, the old docks were totally redeveloped.
15. Between 1995 and 2005, the old houses were rebuilt.
16. The central business district was completely modernised during the time
period.

Pick two or three of the most noticeable differences in the map and write a general
statement for each. This will be your overview paragraph.
The more specific changes should be included in your main body
paragraphs.
How to Describe Locations
You will also be expected to describe where things are maps and describe where
changes have occurred.
You can use ‘to the left’ and ‘to the right’, but a better way is to use ‘north’,
‘south’, ‘east’ and ‘west’. Students should draw the symbols on the question
paper if they are not already there.
Examples:
The forest to the south of the river was cut down.
A golf course was constructed to the north of the airport.
The houses in the south-west of the town were demolished.
The green fields to the north-west of the city were redeveloped as a park.
The airport in the centre of the city was relocated to the north-east of the river.
The school to the south-east was knocked down and a new one built to the east
of the forest.
Finally, you will also be expected to use prepositions of place, e.g.
at/in/on/by/beside/to/off/from, to describe where things are.
Examples:
Dramatic changes took place in the city centre.
To the south of the town, there is a golf course surrounded by trees.
A new school was built next to the swimming pool.
The old road running from north to south was replaced by a new motorway.
A marina was built on the banks of the river.
