I. INTRODUCTION
The construction of Hendrick’s gin palace began in 2016, and opened in October 2018 by
William Grant & Sons, UK-based spirit company.

1.1 COMPANY BACKGROUND

According to the date on its vintage black bottle, Hendrick’s gin was
established in 1886, though that was when its whisky-making owner,
William Grant & Sons, was founded in Dufftown on Speyside. They
didn’t get round to making Hendrick’s for over a century.

But it backed and launched in 1999 at Girvan,

Scotland. It was invented by Lesley Gracie, a
Yorkshire native, who was hired by William Grant &
Sons to work in new liquid development for some of
their products.

a new super-premium gin.
In addition to the traditional Juniper
infusion, Hendrick’s uses Bulgarian rose
and cucumber to add flavor

III. F U N C T I O N

This building has been served as showroom

and laboratory for master and experts seen it
was opened.

Especially, it is not available for public to

visit, unless you get invitation from the
founder to attend and taste the best gin
inside.

FIGURE 7: Victorian-inspired walled garden

The distillery is formed of four key
elements: A Victorian-inspired walled
garden which encloses three glasshouses,
a central accommodation spine (which
houses a bar, lab space and lecture
theatre), three individual stillhouses, and
an external service yard with support
facilities for the distillation process Figure 8: The Laboratory

The main glasshouse is situated centrally within the walled garden and is formed of black
brick arches and a Victorian-inspired curved glass roof with intricate steelwork detailing. It is
flanked by two smaller glasshouses on either side which house a variety of exotic botanicals.
One hothouse contains flora indigenous to a Mediterranean environment such as lemons and
oranges, whilst the other has a tropical environment. Together they act as a playground for the
head Botanist and creator of Hendrick’s to cultivate and experiment with new expressions of
the spirit.

4.1 MATERIAL

For the first material that it was

used to cover most parts of the
building is brick which is not the
simple brick that we can see at
normal residences. This brick was
named “Facing Brick Linea 7021”
and made by Vande Moortel
Company, which is a family
business and established since
1864. This material was created
using texture and color to make
this structure looks like a temple
that serves a wealthy family. Figure 6: Front View of Hendrick’s gin palace

Figure facing brick Linea 7021 Vande Moortel Company

9
The second material that you will see a lots after the brick is clear glass. This material was used to cover the
front building. As you can see, the glass was put to cover the roof, four round window, a round door , and
small glasshouse on the side as well.

Figure : Front View of Hendrick’s gin palace in the evening Clear Glass

The third material that was used as a display of the garden is grass. If you look at the front of the
glasshouses, you will see a huge garden fills with grass with the shape of wave. It looks like the wave of
mountain. The shape like that is made almost all the parts of the garden to make it look like you are
staying at the mountain, even the real life, this place is located near the coast and farms.

22
Because of this place is served as showroom, and
stocks some gins, and to protect the quality of the
products, so it is not necessary to put a lot of
windows there to let the light from the sun to get
inside, but we got three glasshouses at the front of
the building instead. The main glasshouse is
located at the central of the build has been served
for guests. So, while they are tasting the gin, they
also can enjoy the view from other glasshouses on
the side which is filled by different types of plant,
and the view from the Victorian-inspired walled
garden as well.

23
VI. P E R S O N A L IMPRESSION

There are several buildings could choose from, but I

chose this one because of its position. For its location
in Scotland, United Kingdom, which is the same area
as in a Netflix movie that I watched on Christmas Eve
last year, and because of the way they designed this
facility to look like an old-fashioned building which
would be served to a king or queen. The budget to
invest on this construction is the third reason. Bases on
my research, this place was spent around 15 million
dollars, which is too much money to spend just for one
building. So, it keeps me wonder and wants to get into
this place more.
