Label Annotation

Water A polar molecule made of 1 oxygen and 2 hydrogen atoms.

molecule

Polarity Having positively & negatively charged areas because of an uneven distribution of
electrons.

Negative pole Area with more electrons, around the oxygen atom.

Positive pole Area with fewer electrons, near the hydrogen atom nuclei.

Hydrogen A weak bond formed between polar water molecules.

Water Properties Explanation

Cohesion is high because H-bonds make water molecules stick to each other more strongly. It
causes surface tension.

Density is lower as because extra hydrogen bonds cause cold water molecules to move apart
ice slightly

High specific heat because some heat is used to break H-bonds so more is needed to raise the
temperature.

Excellent solvent because polar water molecules dissolve so many substances.

Transparent A useful property of water if you live in water. It lets water plants do
photosynthesis.
