When you say or shout suddenly out of surprise or excitement, you express an exclamation.
You can use it to express compliments, by saying “what” or “what a” followed by a noun phrase.

 What a beautiful dress! (singular noun)

 What beautiful costumes! (plural noun)

Cultural Awareness

 In English-speaking countries, people tend to express compliments more than

we do in Indonesia.
 To accept a compliment, we should said “Thank you.”
Example: A: You look pretty in your new dress.
B: Thank you.

 Indonesians tend to refuse compliments.

Example: A: Baju yang kamu kenakan sangat bagus.
B: Tidak! Baju ini sudah lama.

Olivia : Wow, it looks beautiful!
Sabrina : Really? Thanks
Olivia : Yes. Do you learn by yourself?
Sabrina : Yes, I watched some videos on the internet and I tried for several times. I want to be a florist.
Olivia : Good job! With this kind of skill, I’m sure you can make it happen.

B: Oh, thanks.
 The way Indonesians respond to congratulations is different. Indonesians
tend to reject the gesture.
Example: A: Selamat atas keberhasilanmu dalam kompetisi.
B: Tidak, ini hanyalah kompetisi kecil.
