A.     Introductory Paragraph:

 Step 4:             Make an arguable claim/thesis about how the author uses the
element, technique or device to support the central idea of the text. (Example:
Writing strategy develops the central idea because it conveys…
B.     Supporting Paragraph:
 Step 1:             Write a topic sentence: For example: The central idea of the text
is supported by the author’s utilization of writing strategy/lit device of your
choice.
 Step 2:             Include a quotation/textual examples to support your claim.
 Step 3:             Provide an explanation/analysis of your text-based example and
how it works to support the central idea of the text.
 You must repeat steps 2 and 3 so that you have provided 2 – 3 examples of how the
element/technique/device supports the central idea. Use transitions like furthermore,
additionally, also, too, as well (For example: Furthermore, the central idea is reinforced
when… OR Moreover, writing strategy/lit device of your choice
affirms/illustrates/establishes, or expresses…).
 Step 4: Provide a thoughtful and insightful concluding sentence.

C.     Concluding Paragraph:


 Step 1:             Reworded claim/thesis statement.
 Step 2:             Insightful sentence referring to author’s purpose
 Step 3:             Reworded sentence that refers to the central idea and the writing
strategy/lit device that develops the central idea  

REMINDERS:
 Make sure you “ICE” quotes. Instead of including page numbers, you’ll refer to
line numbers. QUOTES NEVER STAND ALONE!
 DO NOT USE YOU, YOUR, WE, US, ME, I, ETC.
 Write about only ONE central idea and ONE writing strategy but support with 2-
3 pieces of evidence.
