Exploring Our
Shadow Self
Our shadow self usually forms in childhood due to environmental
factors. When we act a certain way and we're told to stop or even
punished for it, it's only natural that we'd want to stop acting that
way. We'd want to suppress that trait, consciously or unconsciously.
Thus the shadow self develops.

Can you recall being punished or told to stop when displaying certain
traits as a child? Which ones and what was the reason your parent or
caregiver gave?

Working on your
Shadow Self
Here are some prompts that you can ask yourself in order to begin your
Shadow Work journey.
Shadow Work is a process that we never really finish, so these are just to
get you started.

What's a trait about yourself that you struggle to accept?

Why do you think this is and where do you believe this trait comes from? Is it actually
a trait you need to suppress or where you just told that you should?

Do you need to work on this trait or do you plan to accept it? How? How does this
make you feel?

Accepting the
Shadow

As much as Shadow Work is about uncovering your shadow self and

growing from it, it's also about accepting and forgiving yourself for these
traits.
Forgiveness doesn't mean that we give ourselves permission to continue being
destructive or engaging in behaviour that hurts ourselves and others; it means
acknowledging that we're human and that we CAN grow.

What do you like about yourself?

What shadow traits have you discovered and actually quite like?

We don't have to 'delete' our shadow traits. We may need to work on some, but
most shadow traits (being loud and extroverted, for example) are actually just parts
of our personality and we've been conditioned to believe we should hide them.
