ACTIVITY: TEACHING METHODOLOGIES SUITED FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Direction: What should be your frame of mind in terms of teaching methodologies, if you have
students diagnosed as having special needs?
1. Social and behavioral disability
Individuals with special needs have a mental, emotional, or physical disability. They are the
children who have acted differently than the other children. Teachers have challenges while
working with and educating students who have special needs. Teachers must be more adaptive
and imaginative when it comes to dealing with instructional tactics that will surely boost the
academic and personal development of kids with special needs.
2. Giftednes
Students that have an extremely high capacity to perform or the potential to achieve at greater
levels than others their age, experience, and environment in one or more areas. I believe that
instructors should manage it with a variety of teaching approaches since talented individuals will
flourish and undoubtedly make progress in their academics, and I believe that providing them
with a variety of activities will develop and sharpen their talents.
3. ADHD
Children who struggle to focus and sustain their attention. It's probable that this problem has
biological and genetic roots. I believe that the instructor should pay more attention to this sort of
student; the learning materials should always include something that will draw the attention of
the individual who has this type of need. The teacher should constantly make the student feel
that he or she is a part of the community.
ASSESSMENT
Directions: Following are behaviors exhibited by children with special needs. Identify
what might be the disability or special need associated with the behaviors.
1. Bursts into tears, without any reason.
Bursting into tears without any logical reason might be because of a child wanting
something or things not going according to what is on his/her mind. This type of behavior
belongs to Showing inappropriate types of behavior or feelings even under normal
circumstances Common pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression that falls under
SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL PROBLEMS AND BEHAVIORAL INDICATORS Emotional
or Behavioral Disorders. Emotional disorders are typically treated with a combination of
medications and psychosocial interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy,
family psychoeducation, social skills training, interpersonal psychotherapy, or relaxation
training.
2. Runs around the room and picks on classmates even if teacher is talking.
A hyper and energy filled child that does not seem to have any loss of energy are
characterized as a being with ADHD or Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder that
performs types of negative behaviors such as being hyperactive and impulsiveness or
different behaviors that belongs under ADHD characteristics. People with ADHD are
often helped or managed with medications, education, skills training, and psychological
counseling that may be or would not be harsh in any way. ADHD could still not be cured
for the meantime.
3. Looks sullen all the time and keeps to himself.
A child or a person that acts sullen and monopolize his or her own feelings or problems
that keeps him in that state. People or child with this behavior often has physical and
sensory challenges and behavioral indicators. These type of people experience
insecurity, embarrassment and low self-esteem or other behavior that falls under the
indicators. They can be assisted in many ways as long as a person could either relate or
a relative or someone close to the person. A person with a personal problem can
sometimes be assisted with an open-heart communication.
4. Always picks up a fight with classmates, approximately five times a day.
Students with this kind of behavior has a high chance of being diagnosed with ADHD
and should be separated from normal students. ADHD can’t be fully treated but it can
still be managed with proper disciplinary actions and steps to be taken. Students with
uncontrollable stress or limit should be given attention for it can cause chaos or things to
get out of hand.
5. Cannot distinguish letter p from d.
People with visual impairments can experience abnormal field of view or eyesight that
can either hinder their reading ability or perception. People that cannot distinguish the
letter p from d can be a person with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a disorder that a learning
disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and
learning how they relate to letters and words. As for the treatment of the disorder,
Dyslexia cannot be cured for it comes from the genes of the patient. Although, it can still
be managed to minimized the effects.
6. Does not have eye contact with classmates who want to play with him.
A student that prevents eye contact with a possible playmate, might have some possible
behavioral indicators. Such as having difficulty with social perception. Social perception
refers to identifying and utilizing social cues to make judgments about social roles, rules,
relationships, context, or the characteristics of others. Behavioral disorder is a disorder
that affects the student’s social behavior; difficulty in interacting with others in a socially
acceptable manner. Autism might also be the cause of the behavior. Autism is a
complex, lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during early childhood
and can impact a person's social skills, communication, relationships, and self-
regulation.
7. Does not pronounce the correct words when reading.
Having difficulty when speaking out written words or stuttering/stammering might be the
cause of childhood-onset fluency disorder or it can also be dyslexia. Dyslexia focuses
mainly on literacy difficulties, whereas stammering is a difficulty with the production of
speech.
8. Can solve math problems much ahead than all the other members of the class.
Gifted children can possess an unusually above average ability that outperforms on the
same age as them. Giftedness of a person cannot be distinguished as a disability or a
special need. Children with thirst for knowledge should be given some more attention
and assisted in any way possible. Gifted child sometimes finds their own level a bit
boring base on their perspective.
9. Little muscle control when engaging in physical activity.
Physical and mental impairments have limited energy, strength, mental alertness or
different basic ability a human should have. Minimal muscle control when performing a
physical activity is caused by genetic and chromosomal defects, teratogenic causes,
prematurity and complications of pregnancy, and acquired causes. In some cases,
certain physical or health disabilities have multiple etiologies. Some range of disability
can be managed or controlled or even cured and some are not due to genetic mutations
or other microscopic related disabilities.
10. Cannot produce accurately words of the teacher.
Students that unable to accurately reproduce his/her teacher’s remarks or statements
may have a metacognitive difficulty. Metacognitive difficulty is a learning disability that
hinders the student from processing information or the progress of their learning goals
from their instructor. A metaphor that resonates with many students is that learning
cognitive and metacognitive strategies offers them tools to "drive their brains." The good
news for teachers and their students is that metacognition can be learned when it is
explicitly taught and practiced across content and social contexts.
