so that there is no water which is flowing the farmers’ rice. As a result, they suffered a failure in
harvesting because the rice they planted is failed to grow caused by this drought.

Alcoholic drinking is very dangerous for our health. There are lot of problems caused by this
dangerous fluid. First, it can cause a swell in our liver. This is because it can trigger the liver to work
extra hard filtering the fluid in our body, so that, the liver becomes swollen because it contains so
much fluid. Secondly, alcoholic drinking damages the human brain. It will decrease the function of
alcohol addict’s brain, thereby increasing the risk of depression and frustration. If this happens, there
will be a change in behavior on the alcoholic, even they can be mad. Then, alcohol also decreases the
functions of our senses. One is our eye is absolutely can be blind because of alcohol. In addition, this
drink can also speed up menopause in women because it decreases the function of reproductive organs
in women, so that they will get menopause sooner than the period in general. Last, it is also able to
cause defects in the fetus. Alcohol that comes into the body of pregnant women also has an impact on
their baby, so that they will be born with disabilities. Therefore, the circulation of alcoholic drinking is
prohibited in Indonesia because it causes several dangerous diseases to the body.

Traffic Problems of a Big City
Cities like New York, London, and Paris have all had to deal with thousands of cars running
through their streets each day. Traffic congestion is a big problem for everyone within the city. The
main reasons why traffic congestion occurs are more cars, poor road management, and poor practices
on behalf of employers.
One of the main reasons why there’s more congestion is due to more cars on the road. The
adult population is increasing and therefore more people want their own personal transport to get
around with. As the number of cars increase the chance of congestion also increases. It’s why in
smaller towns and villages congestion is almost unheard of.
This is coupled with a lack of proper infrastructure. Councils and national governments fail to act on
the looming threat of heavy congestion until it happens. The city doesn’t expand along with an
increasingly car reliant population. A single street with a lane on each side before might not suffice in
ten years after the population has increased. Authorities often fail to convert this into a dual
carriageway.
Alternate routes are also a problem. Cities have limited capacity to expand due to poor funding
and planning restrictions preventing building on green belt spaces. Cities are forced to work with the
routes they already have. If they can’t increase the number of lanes it leads to congestion.
Employers can also play a part in dealing with congestion. Congestion almost always happens when
people are travelling to and from work. Traffic congestion has eased in recent years as a result of
growing unemployment and the introduction of more flexible work hours.
By adhering to the traditional 9-5 routines, there’s a greater chance of congestion. Everyone has to
travel to and from work at the same time each day.
A lack of public transport, or poor public transport options, will also cause problems. If there
isn’t enough buses, trams, or local trains people are forced to take their cars to work. The ratio of
passengers to vehicles decreases, whereas if they were able to take the bus people would feel less of a
need to drive their cars.
In many places, commuters are forced away from public transport by the private companies which run
them. Increasing fare prices, especially on the trains, make driving a car with its associated high fuel
costs cheaper than public transport. By pushing people back to their cars again they only exasperate the
congestion problem.
In conclusion, congestion is mainly caused by a desire for people to drive their cars coupled
with a failure by local government to act. If they invested in more affordable public transport options
and a better infrastructure the incidence of congestion would decrease in major cities.

Answer the questions below!

3 a. What has become a problem in a big city?

b. What are the reasons of traffic congestion?
c. Why cannot a big city build new route?
d. Why employers are also the reason of congestion?

Air Pollution, addition of harmful substances to the atmosphere resulting in damage to the
environment, human health, and quality of life. One of many forms of pollution, air pollution occurs
inside homes, schools, and offices; in cities; across continents; and even globally. Air pollution makes
people sick—it causes breathing problems and promotes cancer—and it harms plants, animals, and the
ecosystems in which they live. Some air pollutants return to earth in the form of acid rain and snow,
which corrode statues and buildings, damage crops and forests, and make lakes and streams unsuitable
for fish and other plant and animal life.
Pollution is changing the earth’s atmosphere so that it lets in more harmful radiation from the
sun. At the same time, our polluted atmosphere is becoming a better insulator, preventing heat from
escaping back into space and leading to a rise in global average temperatures. Scientists predict that the
temperature increase, referred to as global warming, will affect world food supply, alter sea level,
make weather more extreme, and increase the spread of tropical disease.
ost air pollution comes from one human activity: burning fossil fuels—natural gas, coal, and oil—to
power industrial processes and motor vehicles. Among the harmful chemical compounds this burning
puts into the atmosphere are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and
tiny solid particles—including lead from gasoline additives—called particulates. Between 1900 and
1970, motor vehicle use rapidly expanded, and emissions of nitrogen oxides, some of the most
damaging pollutants in vehicle exhaust, increased 690 percent. When fuels are incompletely burned,
various chemicals called volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) also enter the air. Pollutants also come
from other sources. For instance, decomposing garbage in landfills and solid waste disposal sites emits
methane gas, and many household products give off VOCs.
Some of these pollutants also come from natural sources. For example, forest fires emit
particulates and VOCs into the atmosphere. Ultrafine dust particles, dislodged by soil erosion when
water and weather loosen layers of soil, increase airborne particulate levels. Volcanoes spew out sulfur
dioxide and large amounts of pulverized lava rock known as volcanic ash. A big volcanic eruption can
darken the sky over a wide region and affect the earth’s entire atmosphere. The 1991 eruption of
Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, for example, dumped enough volcanic ash into the upper
atmosphere to lower global temperatures for the next two years. Unlike pollutants from human activity,
however, naturally occurring pollutants tend to remain in the atmosphere for a short time and do not
lead to permanent atmospheric change.
Once in the atmosphere, pollutants often undergo chemical reactions that produce additional
harmful compounds. Air pollution is subject to weather patterns that can trap it in valleys or blow it
across the globe to damage pristine environments far from the original sources.

Dear Danny,

All the best to you for the New Year! How are things going in the Land of the Rising Sun? I
must say, I really envy you getting that Tokyo gig with the company. Somehow they overlooked me on
that one and I am forced to slug it out here through another frigid and snowy Montreal winter. Brrrr!

I heard through the grapevine that business is going well there. Rumor has it that you guys are
just about to close a big deal with the Japanese government for an M-750 Simulator. Great news! Good
for the company and good for you. Keep up the great work!

Did you hear about Margie Bronson suddenly leaving the company just before year-end? It was
a bit of a shock to say the least. She gave one week's notice and was gone. Nobody knows for sure
what's up with her but rumors have been flying fast and furious that she went through a bit of a
personal meltdown and has now gone underground to lick her wounds for a while. There could be
some truth to that since her long time relationship ended recently and three months ago she was passed
over for that director position that was up for grabs. I'll keep you posted when we find out more.

As for me, I am quite busy these days on the Branscombe Systems Project. We are entering
Phase Two now, and that is expected to run for three years, at least. Frank Schindler is Senior Project
Manager and I am Team Leader of the Embedded Systems Group. I am enjoying it so far. Whether I'll
feel the same way in three years, I'm not sure. By then I might be ready to join you in Japan.

I'm still kicking butt in the squash court and am managing to get in two or three matches per
week. What about squash in Japan? Have you been able to play any over there? Are there even any
squash courts? I suppose since you are in Tokyo there must be some. Let me know.

I have to go now and attend to family duties. Jonathon needs some help with his homework and
Angie wants me to fix something in the kitchen. You single guys traveling the world sure are lucky!

Keep me posted whenever you can. I really enjoy receiving your letters and getting the details
of your life in Japan.

Your squash buddy,

Dave

Rika : You mean our school's theatre show? No, I didn't.
Andra : No wonder I didn't see you there.
Rika : I planned to come. I was about to go but I cancelled due to the heavy rain.
Andra : Did it rain in your area?
Rika : Yes.
Andra : Too bad. It was so bright and clear around our school.
Rika : How was the show?
Andra : Well, I must say that it did not satisfy enough:
Rika : Why do you say that?
Andra : It's because the actors and actresses didn't put good make up.
Rika : Was their make up too over?
Andra : No. They didn't look using make up instead. I admit the story was good. I got the
message but the make up and wardrobe were too bad.
Rika : I heard they prepared the show about five months.
Andra : They're not professional yet as they can't use the time well for a small show.
