SOIL NAILING & GROUTING

SOIL NAILING
Soil nailing is a technique for adding slender unstressed
reinforcement to a soil mass in order to improve its properties
and characteristics. It is a technique commonly used for
strengthening soil and making it more stable. Moreover, soil
nailing is a method of strengthening natural soil slopes by
placing grouted steel bars (called nails) into the soil slope with
the goal of enhancing the shear capacity of the failure surface.
The nails are driven through the probable failure planes, and
the resulting frictional force between the grouting surrounding
the nails and the soil provides the necessary stabilizing force.
Because the purpose of the nail is to offer tensile resistance,
its pull-out capacity is of great interest. Pull-out tests are
performed in conjunction with the installation to verify the
design capability.

SOIL GROUTING
Grouting is a common procedure for securing and reinforcing
rock, soil, and concrete. Grouting is the process of injecting
pumpable materials into a soil or rock formation in order to
alter its physical properties. Details of soil nailing, grouting

It is the process of injecting a slurry or liquid solution into a

soil or rock formation. The grout is the substance that is
injected. Grouting began as a method for constructing vertical
seepage barriers beneath dams and hydraulic structures by injecting cement slurry into the void
area of river bed material.
Depending on the soil or rock type and the area to be grouted, several materials may be used for
grouting. Nevertheless, the essential procedure is the same - fluid grout is injected into the soil or
rock, which settles and decreases or seals the material's permeability.

PROCEDURES
Nail reinforcing bars are placed and grouted into pre-drilled holes. These nails are installed at a
10 to 20 degree angle to the vertical.
Shotcrete, concrete, or other grouting materials are put to the excavation face as the excavation
progresses to grout the reinforcing steel or nails.

TYPES OF SOIL NAILING TECHNIQUES

 Drilled and grouted Soil Nailing method

- The holes are pierced in the walls or slope face in this kind of soil nailing method.
- After that, nails are driven into the pre-drilled holes.
- The hole is then filled with grouting materials such as concrete, shotcrete, and so on.
- Nail diameters range from 100 to 200mm, with 1.5m spacing.

 Driven soil nailing method

- It is used to stabilize soil slopes temporarily.

- The process of driven soil nailing is much faster. It does not, however, prevent the
reinforcing steel or nails against corrosion.
- The nails are pushed in the slope face during excavation in the driven soil nailing method.
- The nail's diameter ranges from 19mm to 25mm, which is rather tiny.
- Nail spacing should be between 1 and 1.2 meters.

 Self drilling Soil Nailing method

- In the self-driven soil nailing method, hollow bars are utilized.

- The slope surface is drilled with bars. During the drilling procedure, grout is injected at
the same time.
- It is more time efficient than drilled grouted nailing.
- In comparison to driven nails, the self-drilling soil nailing method gives better corrosion
resistance.

Self driven soil nail method

 Launched Soil Nail method

- The steel bars are driven into the soil with a single shot utilizing a compressed air
mechanism.
- Soil nails are easy to install, but controlling the length of bar that penetrates the ground is
difficult.
- Integrated into the sliding soil to bolster an unstable or possibly unstable soil mass
capacity.
- The nail has a diameter of 38mm and a length of around 6m.

 Jet Grouted Soil Nailing method

- Jets are utilized to erode the soil and create holes on the slope surface in the jet grouted
soil nailing method.
- Steel bars are then put in the hole, which is then grouted with concrete.
- The steel bars are well protected from corrosion by jet grouted soil nailing (nails).

 Notes to consider when installing soil nails

- Soil Nails must normally penetrate 4 to 5 meters beyond the slip plane into the passive
zone.

- The horizontal or vertical spacing of soil nails must be proportional to the soil's strength.
At the edge of any surface that is being stabilized, extra soil nails should be inserted.

- Soil nailing should begin as soon as possible following excavation. Any delay might
result in the soil slope collapsing.
