The objective of this report is to provide the reader with information on how the
organisation manages the challenges through effective leadership.

3
1.0 The concept and importance of leadership

Leadership is an important function of management which helps to maximize

efficiency and to achieve organisational goals. The following points justify the
importance of leadership in a concern. [ CITATION Pra21 \l 1033 ]

Initiate’s action- Leader is a person who starts the work by communicating the
policies and plans to the subordinates from where the work actually starts.

Motivation- A leader proves to be playing an incentive role in the concern’s working.

He motivates the employees with economic and non-economic rewards and thereby
gets the work from the subordinates.

Providing guidance- A leader has to not only supervise but also play a guiding role
for the subordinates. Guidance here means instructing the subordinates the way
they have to perform their work effectively and efficiently.

Creating confidence- Confidence is an important factor which can be achieved

through expressing the work efforts to the subordinates, explaining them clearly their
role and giving them guidelines to achieve the goals effectively. It is also important to
hear the employees with regards to their complaints and problems.

Building morale- Morale denotes willing co-operation of the employees towards

their work and getting them into confidence and winning their trust. A leader can be
a morale booster by achieving full co-operation so that they perform with best of their
abilities as they work to achieve goals.

Builds work environment- Management is getting things done from people. An

efficient work environment helps in sound and stable growth. Therefore, human
relations should be kept into mind by a leader. He should have personal contacts
with employees and should listen to their problems and solve them. He should treat
employees on humanitarian terms.

Co-ordination- Co-ordination can be achieved through reconciling personal

interests with organisational goals. This synchronization can be achieved through
proper and effective co-ordination which should be primary motive of a leader.

2.0 Different leadership theories and styles

2.1 What is a leadership theory?

Leadership theories are the explanations of how and why certain people become
leaders. They focus on the traits and behaviors that people can adopt to increase
their leadership capabilities. Some of the top traits that leaders say are vital to good
leadership include [ CITATION Wes201 \l 1033 ]:

 Strong ethics and high moral standards

 Great self-organizational skills
 Efficient learner
 Nurture’s growth in employees
 Fosters connection and belonging

2.2 Major leadership theories.

While there are dozens of leadership theories and psychology, there are a few that
are more well-known. These more common leadership theories are important to
understand and recognize.

 Behavioral theory

Behaviorism or the behavioral learning theory is a popular concept that focuses on

how students learn. Behaviorism focuses on the idea that all behaviors are learned
through interaction with the environment. This learning theory states that behaviors
are learned from the environment, and says that innate or inherited factors have very
little influence on behavior. [ CITATION Wes20 \l 1033 ]

 Contingency theory

The basic premise of Contingency Theory is that there is no one best way to lead an
organization. There are too many external and internal constraints that will alter what
really is the best way to lead is in a given situation. In other words, it all depends
upon the situation at hand as to what will be the best course of action. [ CITATION
Pat10 \l 1033 ]

5
 Great Man theory

The great man theory of leadership states that some people are born with the
necessary attributes that set them apart from others and that these traits are
responsible for their assuming positions of power and authority. A leader is a hero
who accomplishes goals against all odds for his followers. The theory implies that
those in power deserve to be there because of their special endowment. [ CITATION
Cor16 \l 1033 ]

 Management theory

Management theories are the set of general rules that guide the managers to
manage an organization. Management theories (also known as "Transactional
theories") focus on the role of supervision, organization, and group performance.
Theories are an explanation to assist employees to effectively relate to the business
goals and implement effective means to achieve the same. [ CITATION Tec12 \l
1033 ]

 Participative theory

Participative leadership theories suggest that the ideal leadership style is one that
takes the input of others into account. These leaders encourage participation and
contributions from group members and help group members feel more relevant and
committed to the decision-making process. [ CITATION Ken19 \l 1033 ]

 Power -and-Influence theory

Power-and-Influence leadership theory focuses on how leaders can motivate their

team by using (surprise, surprise) their power and/or influence. The main study
supporting this theory in action was conducted by John French and Bertram Raven
in 1959. They identified five forms of power: Coercive power, Reward power,
Legitimate power, Referent power and Expert power. [ CITATION Ben19 \l 1033 ]

3.0 Role of leadership on organisational change

A leader works as a change agent who can manage organizational process

effectively. The changing trends have compelled organizations to constantly review
and reevaluate the recent technological advancements and customers’ expectations
to understand, adopt and implement changes in their business model. Change is
today’s demand and required to survive. Now days, Organizations better understand
the importance of change and prepare themselves to adopt not only the current but
also for future trends to get long term success. Different researches show that 70
percent of organizational change fails to acquire their objectives just because of poor
leadership style as they play a central role in an organization. So, the process of
change demands an effective and highly skilled leadership that are able to perceive
the most desirable feature and address the issues in a most appropriate manner. By
the analysis of literature and the results of real-life case which are considered for this
research paper shows, that a leader with its competencies i.e., “Visionary”,
“democratic” and “transformational” along with “Innovative Approach” can ascertain
more effective organizational change with success. As a result, this research
proposed a model that obtain from leadership competencies i.e., organizational
change, sustainable success and innovation which expresses the relationship
between successful organizational change and role of leadership.
