Satellite Sheet Answer

Given:
MEarth = 5.98x1024 kg - REarth = 6.37 x 106 m - G (Gravity) = 6.673 x 10-11 N m2/kg2

1. A satellite wishes to orbit the earth at a height of 100 km above the surface of the earth.
Determine the speed, acceleration and orbital period of the satellite.
)

2. A geosynchronous satellite is a satellite that orbits the earth with an orbital period of 24
hours, thus matching the period of the earth's rotational motion. A special class of
geosynchronous satellites is a geostationary satellite. A geostationary satellite orbits the
earth in 24 hours along an orbital path that is parallel to an imaginary plane drawn
through the Earth's equator. Such a satellite appears permanently fixed above the same
location on the Earth. If a geostationary satellite wishes to orbit the earth in 24 hours
(86400 s), then how high above the earth's surface must it be located?
(Height = 3.59 x 107 m)
3. Consider a satellite which is in a low orbit about the Earth at an altitude of 220 km above
Earth's surface. Determine the orbital speed of this satellite. ? ( )

4. A geostationary satellite of mass 600 kg orbits at a distance of 35 800 km. Calculate

the force of gravity that keeps the satellite in orbit. Known that the mass of satellite
= 6.0 x 102 kg.

5. A 512 kg satellite is in a circular orbit about the Earth at a height above the Earth equal
to the Earth's mean radius. (a) Find the satellite's orbital speed. (b) Find the period of its
revolution. (c) Find the gravitational force acting on it.

6. A 17.0-kg satellite has a circular orbit with a period of 2.31 h and a radius of 9.10×10 6
m around a planet of unknown mass. If the magnitude of the gravitational
acceleration on the surface of the planet is 8.10 m/s2, and the force of gravity between
the satellite and the planet is 100N. what is the radius of the planet?
)
7. A 71.4 kg satellite orbits the earth at a distance of 7x106m from the center of the earth (a
distance of 630 km above the earth's surface). How fast must the satellite be going to
maintain its orbit if the free fall acceleration at this distance is 8.14 m/s2?

8. Two Satellites revolve around a planet in circular orbits, the first moves in an orbit of
radius 9.7x103m with a periodic time of 2.74x104 s and the second has a period of 1.09x105
s. Find the radius of the orbit of the second satellite. Given that G = 6.673 x 10-11 N m2/kg2

9. A satellite orbits the earth at a height of 100 km above the surface of the earth. The
maximum time it is visible from a specific point is 22 minutes. Determine the orbital
period of the satellite and the minimum number of satellites needed to build a 24-hour
coverage system for this point.
(
10. Prove that the altitude of a geostationary satellite is 35863Km.
11. A satellite is in an elliptical orbit with a perigee of 1000 km and apogee of 4000 km.
using a mean earth radius of 6378.14 km, find the period of the orbit in hours,
minutes, and seconds. (T=8325.1864 s = 2ℎ. 18 min. 45.19 sec)
12. An earth station is situated at (25.89◦ N, 45.35 ◦ E). Calculate the look angle to
ARABSAT 5B (26◦ E). Find the following:
 The central angle γ (31.93).
 The elevation angle El.( 52.814)
 The intermediate angle α.( 38.81)
 The azimuth angle.( 218.81)
 Is the satellite visible to the earth station or not? yes
13. Having a satellite with maximum central angle of 60o, find the following:
 The coverage area of the satellite. (A= 1.278 * 108 Km2)
 The number of satellites needed to form a constellation using inclined
orbits.(N=4.84=5)
 The number of satellites needed to form a constellation using polar
orbits.(N=8)

percentage used for the guard bands? (0.088 (8.8 %))

The frame length is 2 ms. Data are encoded using QPSK with a signal element rate of
60.136 Mbaud. All traffic bursts are of equal length of 16,512 bits. The reference bust has
length 576 bits, the preamble is 560 bits, and the guard interval is 24 bits. Assume that
there are two participating reference stations, so that two reference bursts are required.

Tpre : Time to send preamble.
Tburst: Time to send the traffic burst.
Tg: Time to send the guard bits.
