This manual does not give complete installation instructions for the Alpha systems. For the complete
set of instructions use the Alpha III/ST/MT/RT Installation Manual.
Decide the place for the mammography system and the method of installing - base plate or wall mount.
For the wall mount installation, find the necessary dimensions from the Alpha Installation Manual.
Remove the ECS/EPS board from carriage to prevent damage when lifting up the column.
Lay the column down with the c-arm axle against the floor. Be careful with the cables coming out not
to damage them.
Installing the ECS/EPS mechanics to the c-arm: Remove the c-arm top cover and the small back cover.
Make sure that the metal plate attached to the ECS/EPS mechanism is not bent or otherwise damaged.
Normally the additional counterweight is already attached when the mammography system is delivered
with the ECS/EPS from the factory.
When installing the ECS/EPS afterwards the addition has to be attached to the counterweight.
Loosen the bottom four bolts holding the column top hat and pull it out. Remove the L-shaped
bumper. Pull the counterweight outwards until you can easily reach the bolts. When installing both
systems at the same time, push the counterweight in at this point.
Remove completely the two support blocks holding the bar for the steel cables. Open the bolts holding
the two plastic glides (two bolts a side).
Make sure when you tighten the bolts that the two counterweights are in line with each other. This is
to prevent the additional piece from touching the inside of the column when the carriage is driven up
or down.
WARNING! The total weight of the column, carriage and the counterweight is now over
120 kg. Do not lift alone!
Be careful if the carriage moves when lifting the column. Take special care if the
counterweight is not resting against the assembly pin.
Tighten the side plates holding the column upright. Do not forget the tightening
plate and do not tighten the bolts too tight holding it. This might deform the
column and prevent the counterweight from travelling freely.
Take the slide plate and slide it over the c-arm axle. The rounded side of the plate will be facing
towards the carriage. Do not tighten the lock screws to hold the plate in place yet. You will have to
set the correct distance when finally putting the covers on.
Plug in the footpedals to the connection box in the back of the column.
Proceed the installation according to the Alpha Installation Instructions and return to ECS/EPS when
the C-arm is attached. Hang the c-arm to the axle assembly so that the motor enters the axle.
Note! Be careful not to damage: 1. The motor, 2. The metal plate sticking out of the ECS/EPS
mechanism or 3. Microswitch placed on the side of the ECS/EPS mechanism.
Make sure that the metal plate going through the slots of the optical interrupters on the ECS/EPS
Driver Board is correctly positioned and that there are no cables entering its pathway when the c-arm
moves.
Provided that you have all the connectors closed, turn the power of Alpha on.
Check the following:
- The LEDs H1 (+34V), H2 (+15V), H4 (+5V) and H5 (if the C-arm is shifted) on
the ECS/EPS Driver Board turn on.
- The c-arm brake release buttons in the c-arm handles do not operate if the C-arm
is shifted. The brake can be released only if the C-arm is in the lowest position
(the photo interrupter has entered the slot and the microswitch on the side of the
ECS/EPS mechanism is activated).
- Press "C-arm up" and "C-arm down" -buttons on the Driver Board momentarily
and see that the drive directions are correct. Drive the C-arm down carefully.
Make sure that the metal plate enters the photo interrupter slot and that the
movement stops.
Warning! The ECS/EPS mechanism and the motor will be damaged if the C-arm is driven against a
mechanical limit. The movement should be stopped by the photo interrupter.
- Drive the C-arm to its upper limit. Check that there is enough slack in the cables.
Make sure that the metal plate enters the photo interrupter slot and that the
movement is stopped.
- Press "Return" -button and check that the adapter returns to lowest position from
all other positions. The movement can be stopped by pressing the "C-arm up"
or "C-arm down" buttons.
- When driven away from the lowest position, check that the c-arm brake does not
release. After returning the c-arm, check that the brake releases again.
- Check that the foot pedal works:
- Proceed the installation according to the Installation Instructions and return to the
ECS/EPS installation after the Alpha installation is finished.
- Install a compression paddle and place something soft on the cassette holder.
Compress in the "ECS/EPS"-mode until the compression current limit is reached.
See that the c-arm movement stops as well.
- Make an exposure and see that the c-arm is returned to the lowest position after
the exposure if the Autorel function is selected on the Alpha control panel.
Pressing the EPS pedal activates only low speed compression. Press EPS pedal
and adjust suitable (about 1cm/sec) low speed from trimpot R11 (clockwise to
increase).
Press REL release pedal to drive back.
Turn the compression force knob (1-6) to position six (6). Turn trimpot R33 totally to zero
(totally counter clockwise). Place a normal bathroom scale under the paddle and compress it
like a breast using EPS pedal. Adjust limit from trimpot R33 (clockwise to increase). Ask
compression stop force from radiologist or tune it to15-20 kg (33-44 lbs). The mechanical
clutch will stop compression at 25kg (55 lbs).
A) Adjustment of mechanical force limit (28-30 kg, 62-66lbs.) with manual compression wheels
- see also 2.13.7 The Mechanical Compression limit page 60, Fig. 2.27e.
- notice that compression force range should be 28-30 kg (62-66lbs.)
Adjust with R33 compression force to be 25-27kg (53-59lbs), fix cable back to the
connector X4 on C-arm board.
Press kV- and Density- buttons for 3 seconds simultaneously. On timer display
appears Ser.
In service menu Pr, select program #52SUP/c by pressing kV+ or kV-. Enter into the
program by pressing AUTOEXP-button. Select parameter c on density pressing kV+.
Press mAs+ and mAs- to select desired subparameter that is indicated in kV display
(see table). Change subparameter value by pressing Density+ and Density-buttons.
mAs-screen indicates the value for default setting 1-6 in newton units. Accept values
pressing AUTOEXP, exit to main menu.
Subparameter determines the compression limit mode. The available modes are 0 or
5. With selection 0, the compression stops at default 1. With selection 5, compression
can be continued by five individual steps up until default 6.
Range for subparameters 1-6 is 5-25,5 kg (11-56lbs.), lower parameter not being less
than the following parameter.
Comments
Adjust the desired parameter 2 and compression forces (switch positions 1-6)
according to desires of the customer.
If needed, use customer's own reference measurement for balance when adjusting
forces. Adjust set values to comply with the used balance measurement system.
1.8.5 Adjustment of SOFT COMPRESSION speed threshold (limit for speed change)
Use scale to state the compression force. Press the EPS pedal and adjust from
trimpot R43 until the compression force is about 5-7 kg (10-14 lbs) when the
speed changes.
Note! The speed change force is an item considered by the operator. Ask the
opinion of the operator when adjusting.
ECS/EPS-200 board
After adjusting the compression paddle speed, adjust the ECS/EPS-movement with R37 on ECS/EPS
board.
Press REL pedal to set movements to start position. Press EPS-pedal and adjust the speed from R37
until the dimension between floor level and compression paddle does not change.
Press the C-ARM-pedal and adjust the C-arm speed from R59 to about 1cm/1sec.
Before placing the top cover on the c-arm, make sure that the cables are correctly
positioned.
Before installing the covers drive ECS/EPS to the lowest position by pressing
"Return" button.
Note! Before installing the top cover remove the UP/DOWN toggle switches to
prevent damage when placing the cover.
Connect the connector for the top cover (marked ECS/EPS) and place it so that
the connector or the cable cannot enter the ECS/EPS mechanism.
Finally place the slide plate close to the covers so that there is no access to the
openings. Secure the slide plate with a 1.5mm Allen wrench.
2. SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS
The ECS/EPS Driver Board Controls the C-arm movement of the ECS/EPS-200TM device. It is an
electronic circuit board that requires software based control from Alpha unit. Software version in
Alpha unit must be 7.27 or greater.
Up, Down and Return switches are also available on the circuit board for service
purposes.
Motor control
The C-arm movement is handled by a pulse width modulated (PWM) DC motor.
The speed of the C-arm and ECS/EPS are separately adjusted with trimmer
potentiometers R37 (C-arm) and R59 (ECS/EPS) respectively. The PWM control
circuit ICA3 (TL494) controls the motor voltage according the reference voltage
(TP3). The motor is activated by pulling the *MOTOR ENABLE signal down.
The direction of the C-arm is determined by relay K2. The default direction of the
C-arm is down.
Movement limits
The C-arm movement limits are sensed with two photointerrupters on the
electronic circuit board (ICD9 and ICD10). When the limit is reached a metal
plate enters the photointerrupter slot turning the photointerrupter transistor off.
Control signals:
Up and down
The user can move the C-arm up and down with a switch located on the cover or
with a footpedal. The *CARM UP signal activates relay K2 and changes the
direction of the motor drive. The motor drive is enabled if the C-arm is not in it's
upper limit.
*CARM DWN signal moves the C-arm down. The motor drive is enabled if the
C-arm is not in it's lower limit.
Return
The user can return the C-arm to it's normal position (down) by pressing the return
switch. This activates D-flip flop ICD6 if the relay K2 is not activated (that is if
the direction of the C-arm is down). When the lower limit is reached the flip flop
is reset and motor drive is disabled.
Autorelease
The autorelease function returns the C-arm down after an exposure. The
information of an exposure is derived from control signals for ANODE MOTOR
DRIVE board (connectors X5 and X6). ANENA signal is active during preheat
sequence and an exposure.
If the compression paddle is driven up after exposure, the C-arm is returned down
after the compression paddle has reached it's upper limit. The information of
compression paddle movement is derived from compression motor encoder
(connector X8).
