LESSON 1: Congruent Triangles

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

a. illustrate triangle congruence.

What I know.

What you need to know.

Definition

Congruent Triangles
Two triangles are congruent if and only if their corresponding parts are congruent. If AB ≅ PQ, BC ≅ QR, AC ≅
PR, ∠A ≅ ∠P, ∠B ≅ ∠Q, and ∠C ≅ ∠R, then, ∆ ABC ≅ ∆ PQR.

Example

1. Given that
∆ KSG ≅ ∆ NSI, name all the corresponding parts.
Solution:
Corresponding Sides Corresponding Angles
KS ≅ NS ∠K ≅ ∠N
SG ≅ SI ∠KSG ≅ ∠NSI
KG ≅ NI ∠G ≅ ∠I

2. Given: ∆ TWO≅ ∆ ISX, m∠O = 55, and SX = 4

Find: 1. m∠X 2. WO

Solution:
1. Because ∠X ≅ ∠O, you know that m∠X = m∠O = 55.
2. Because WO ≅ SX, you know that WO = SX = 4.

What I have learned.

1. Given that ∆ ABD ≅ ∆ CBE, name all the corresponding parts.

2. Given: ∆ ABC≅ ∆ DEC, m∠B = 50, and EC = 3

Find: 1. m∠BCE 2. BC

What I can bring home.

LESSON 2: Proving Triangle Congruence Postulates and Theorem

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to

a. illustrate the SSS, SAS, and ASA congruence postulate;
b. illustrate the SAA congruence theorem;
c. solve corresponding parts of congruent triangles;
d. prove two triangles are congruent; and
e. prove statements on triangle congruence.

What I know.

Identify the following figures of congruence postulate if it is SSS, SAS, or ASA.

______1. ______2. _______3.

What you need to know.

The SSS Postulate

If the three sides of one triangle are congruent to the corresponding sides of the
other triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.

If AB ≅ DE, BC ≅ EF, and AC ≅ DF, then ∆ ABC ≅ ∆ DEF.

The SAS Postulate

If two sides and the included angle of one triangle are congruent to the
corresponding two sides and the included angle of another triangle, then the two
triangles are congruent.

If AB ≅ DE,∠B≅ ∠E, and BC ≅ EF, then ∆ ABC ≅ ∆ DEF.

The ASA Postulate

If two angles and the included side of one triangle are congruent to the
corresponding two angles and the included side of another triangle, then the two
triangles are congruent.

If ∠A ≅ ∠D (A), AB ≅ DE (S), ∠B≅ ∠E (A), then ∆ ABC ≅ ∆ DEF.

Example

1. Which triangles are congruent based on the markings in the given figure?

Solution:
Applying the SSS Postulate, GR ≅ ER, GT ≅ EA, and RT ≅ RA.
Thus, ∆ GRT ≅ ∆ ERA.

2. Fill in the missing statements and reasons.

Given: TI and SE bisect each other at Q. TS ≅ IE.

Prove: ∆ TQS ≅ ∆ IQE

information to complete each statement and identify whether it is SSS, SAS, or ASA Postulate.
