PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MINERALS
OBJECTIVES
a. To determine the different properties of minerals that composes rocks.
b. To be familiarized with some minerals according to their different
properties.
MATERIALS
◦ Newspaper ◦ Vinegar
◦ 5 different rock samples ◦ A piece of broken clay flower pot
◦ Hand lens (only if available) ◦ Piece of glass
◦ Steel knife
◦ Medicine dropper/spoon ◦ Small hammer
PROCEDURES (30pts)
Examine the rock samples. How can you differentiate one rock from another? (2pts)
- I was able to differentiate the rocks from one another according to their shape, size, texture,
weight and color.
1. Rub one rock sample at a time on the broken piece of clay pot. (3pts)
a. What do you see on the pot?
Answer: - A scratch mark.
b. What is the color?
Answer: - For rocks 1, 2 and 3 the color of the mark was just the color of the clay pot,
but for rocks 4 and 5 it was color white.
c. Is the color of the mark the same as the color of the rock sample which you have
rubbed?
Answer: - For rocks 1, 2 and 3 no, it was just the color of the pot
- For rock 4 yes, it was the same as its color which is white
- For the 5th rock no, the color of the mark was white but the rock was orangey
2. Scratch each rock sample with your thumbnail. Did your thumbnail leave a mark on the
rock?
Answer: - No, it did not.
3. If your thumbnail did not leave a mark on the rock, scratch the rock with a piece of glass. If
no mark results, scratch the rock sample with the steel knife. Fill in the table. (15pts)

a. What property of the rock are you testing when you try to scratch it with different
things?
Answer: -The Hardness
b. How will you describe the rock samples scratched by your thumbnail?
Answer: - No rock was scratched by my thumbnail, but if there was ill describe it as a
soft rock
c. How will you describe the rock samples scratched by the piece of glass?
Answer: - The rock samples that are scratched by the piece of glass are hard.
d. How will you describe the rock samples scratched by the steel knife?
Answer: - The rocks are medium.
e. Which of these rocks is the softest?
Answer: – Soft rocks, in my samples since all of them cannot be scratched by
thumbnail. I settled with sample 5 as the softest.
f. Which of these rocks is the hardest?
Answer: – Hard rocks, in my samples its rock 2, the hardest.
4. Line your work table with newspapers to protect it from the acid. Place the rock samples in a
row on the newspaper. Put a drop or more of the acid on each rock sample. Use a hand
lens in observing the rocks while making the test. (If lens is not available make sure to have a
well-lighted place.)
a. In which rock sample do bubbles form?
Answer: - Rock samples 3 and 4.
b. In which rock samples do bubbles not form?
Answer: - Rock samples 1, 2 and 5.
c. What does bubbling tell about the rock samples?
Answer: -The bubbles signal the presence of carbonate minerals.
